Lazy Wolf Guns (LWG) of Spray, Oregon has created a standardized upgrade to Heckler & Koch’s VP9 9mm semi-automatic. The resulting limited-edition gun is the Heckler & Koch VP9 LWG Custom.

LWG starts with the rich feature-set, reliability, double-stack capacity, packaging efficiency, lightweight polymer frame and modern styling of the VP9. It then replaces standard parts with an upgraded LWG Trigger and, in some cases, Wilson Combat front sights.

Like many others, rather than reinvent the wheel, Heckler & Koch has smartly designed around standard parts bins. This gives you economies of scale price benefits and improves quality too. The standard magazine is a durable, steel body HK P30 15-round magazine, but it also uses HK P30 10, 17 and even 20-round magazines.

The advanced LWG/HK Parts Flat Trigger has a trigger pull weight that LWG can set to 3.5 pounds, 4.5 pounds or 5.5 pounds. In lieu of the curved factory trigger, this upgrade has a flat face as does the safety. It’s machined from 7075-T6 aluminum that is then Type 3 hard anodized for durability.

The VP9 changes the standard VP9’s low-profile three white-dot sights that are dovetailed into the slide by putting in a Wilson Combat snag-free green fiber optic sight in front.

The VP9’s disassembly lever is on the left, but it has slide releases on both left and right. Both the magazine release flaps flanking the bottom of the trigger guard are ambidextrous.

The VP9 has also been designed for safety. It has a trigger latch safety, disconnector, disassembly safety, red firing pin cocking indicator at the back of the slide below the rear sight, loaded chamber indicator and firing pin block!

VP9’s dimensions include a 4.09” long barrel in a gun that’s 7.34” long overall. The slide has a good 6.38” sight radius between the sights. Rounding out some key metrics: height is 5.41” and maximum width is 1.32”.

The machined slide is a thing of beauty and wonderful function. It’s made of high-carbon steel, and it has ruggedized nitro-carburized finish. There are wide diagonal slide serrations in both front and back, and then Heckler & Koch adds to that with lateral extensions it calls “charging supports” at the back of the slide that make slide racking much easier.

The cold hammer forged steel barrel feeds via a polished steel ramp. Inside is polygonal rifling with a 1 to 9.8” twist ratio.

The gun has a four-slot MIL-STD 1913 Picatinny rail integrated into the frame just below the recoil spring housing. The grip has three different modular backstraps and three pairs of grip panels that slide in and out for easy configuration for each operator’s preferences.

The muzzle and rear of the slide are generally vertical with a slight forward lean on both surfaces, but it is nowhere near as pronounced as, say, on the HK45.

The grip itself has three subtle finger recesses in front and corresponding downward accent curves on the grip panels. The grip has nice texturing on most surfaces. And then it has two more finger recesses at the grip base just above the magazine floor plate. If the magazine doesn’t drop free when expected, these finger recesses will help finish the job.
