Designed by Benjamin Tyler Henry in the 1850s, the Henry rifle is considered to be one of the first reliable
lever-action repeating rifles. The weapon made its mark in American history when it was heavily utilized in both the American Civil War and by frontiersmen across the American West. The gun was only produced until 1866, but today the Henry rifle remains a strong reminder of the American West.
History of the Henry Rifle
Gunsmith and manufacturer Benjamin Tyler Henry was hired by the New Haven Arms Company in the 1850s to develop a repeating rifle – eventually known as the Henry rifle – that was better than the rifle created by the Volcanic Repeating Arms Company. Volcanic Repeating Arms as a company didn’t last long, but it led to the formation of two legends: Smith & Wesson and the Winchester Repeating Arms Company. The Henry rifle was heavily used during the Civil War, but it was never adopted for service. As a result, many soldiers had to purchase it on their own. The weapon could fire upward of 28 rounds per minute, which at the time was unheard of, but it had no safety and was always in firing position when the hammer was cocked. In 1866 the Henry rifle was modified and renamed the
Winchester Model 1866.
