The History of Marlin Rifles

Marlin was founded in 1870 by John M. Marlin in Connecticut. Marlin, a tool and die maker's apprentice, worked at the Colt firearms plant in nearby Hartford during the Civil War. After the war, Marlin began manufacturing his own line of revolvers and derringers on State Street in New Haven.

Marlin and his team were able to develop today's Model 39 and Model 336, the oldest shoulder arm designs in the world still being produced, according to the manufacturer. The Model 39 was a favorite of sharpshooter and shooting exhibitionist Annie Oakley, who toured in the late 19th and early 20th century. Marlin came up with the first side-ejecting, solid-top receiver, the Marlin Safety, in 1889.

When John Marlin died in 1901, his two sons took over the business, eventually selling the company to a group of New York investors during World War I in 1915. The company was renamed the Marlin Rockwell Corporation and was the largest machine gun supplier to the U.S. and its allies during the war.

The sporting firearms side of the business was sold at auction following the war and took many different forms, including a successful stint selling razor blades. The company was sold to Remington in 2007, but continues to operate under the Marlin banner.
