The Mossberg 500 is a vast lineup affordable yet still compelling, high-quality, feature rich pump-action shotguns spanning 12-gauge, 20-gauge and .410 bore variants. These are built around a common receiver and action. But after that, they vary, sometimes rather considerably. To wit, barrel choices span 18.5”, 20”, 22”, 24”, 26” and 28” lengths. There is also a variety of sights, finishes, chokes and other specifications. The various combinations result in nearly 30 models.

The 30 models fall into various groups. These are 500 Hunting All Purpose Field, 500 Hunting All Purpose Field – Classic, 500 Youth Super Bantam – All-Purpose, 500 Turkey, 500 Turkey – Tactical Turkey, FLEX 500 All-Purpose, FLEX 500 Super Bantam – All-Purpose, FLEX 500 Youth Combo Field/Deer, 500 Combo Turkey/Deer, 500 Combo Field/Security, 500 Combo Field/Deer, 510 Youth Mini Super Bantam – All-Purpose, 500 Retrograde and 500 – ATI Tactical.

Except the 510 Youth Mini Super Bantam – All-Purpose, the rest are 5+1 capacity guns. Let’s sample two groups.

First, the 500 Hunting All Purpose Field cover all three gauges. They have dual bead sights, vent ribs, 13.875" length of pull (LOP) and blued barrels. Most come standard with a trio of Briley Accu-Set chokes: Skeet, Improved Cylinder and Modified. All three have fluted snouts and come in a carrying case. The .410 has a 24” barrel, 43.75” overall length and weighs 6.25 pounds. At the other end are two 12-gauge models with 28” barrels, 47.5” overall lengths and 7.5-pound weights. One has blued metal and classic walnut while the other is blued metal with black synthetic.

Second, the 500 Youth Super Bantam wields a 22” vent rib barrel that’s topped by both a front-bead and a mid-bead. These also come with three Briley Accu-Set chokes. Length of pull is adjustable from 12” to 13” using an included 1” thick black spacer between the end of the stock and the thick black rubber buttpad. Weight is 5.25 pounds and overall length is 39.75”.

The synthetic stock has a shortened classic American silhouette. There are also integrated sling studs at front on the magazine cap and in back on the stock’s bottom slope.

The most vibrant model uses a whimsical Muddy Girl Wild stock that’s designed more to excite its users than help hide them. Its trendy pink, gray, violet and black seem graffiti inspired.

Variants of this gun include the all black 500 Super Bantam – All-Purpose, the camouflaged 500 Super Bantam – Turkey and 500 Super Bantam – Waterfowl models. These differ only in color. The 500 Super Bantam – Field/Deer Combo comes with two easily swapped barrels. The second is a fully rifled 24” length barrel with adjustable rifle sights. It makes total length 41.75”.
