The 5+1 capacity Mossberg 500 Combo Field/Deer shotguns are affordable, high-quality and feature-rich pump-actions spanning seven 12-gauge and 20-gauge variants. All share a common receiver and action with all other Mossberg 500 models. And this a great thing as 500 series started production in 1962, has sold millions and is one of the most successful shotguns in history.

The 500 Combo Field/Deer comes standard with two easily swapped barrels. These differ between 12-gauge and 20-gauge. We’ll start with the 12-gauge.

All seven are consistent with their neat 13.87” length of pull. And all come standard with three Briley Accu-Set (Skeet, Improved Cylinder and Modified) chokes. These are beautifully crafted with tapering flutings and come with their own carrying case. From there they start to vary in stock configuration, finish/camo pattern, sights, etc. Four of the seven Field/Deer combos are 12-gauge. Each has two barrels. In each case, one is 24” and rifled while the other is 28” and topped with a vent rib.

The 24” length fully rifled slug barrel shortens overall length to 43.5”. Weight is 7.25 pounds. It’s got a fully rifled bore, and except where otherwise noted, it’s topped with adjustable rifle sights. Note that when you swap barrels, you don’t have to do any adjustments to the sights.

The companion 28” length barrel draws the overall length out to 47.5”. Weight nudges up to 7.5 pounds. This barrel’s vent rib sits atop a collection of 12 vertical bridge piers. The repetitive frequency means perfectly balanced support, but it also creates a visual elongation of the gun. The rib is topped by a dual bead (front-bead/mid-bead) setup.

This 12-gauge setup has four variants. The first has a classic American silhouette synthetic stock. Behind it is the thick black “checkered” recoil pad. It’s skeletonized and soaks up plenty of recoil. There are also integrated sling studs at front on the magazine cap and in back on the stock’s bottom slope.

This model uses the masterfully effective tree limb and tree bark Mossy Oak Break Up Country camo to effortlessly obscure these guns.

The second model has a more classic look. The receiver, barrels, vent rib, etc., are blued while the forend and stock are walnut. The wooden stock has dual combs you can swap out for cheek alignment. And the 24” barrel lacks adjustable rifle sights. Instead, it’s capped with a rearward pointing elevated scope base cantilevered over the receiver.

The third 12-gauge is the same except it has a standard American stock.

A fourth 12-gauge is like the second model, but all black with the wooden parts being replaced by synthetic ones and it’s an inch longer overall. It doesn’t just have the cantilevered scope rail but a matte black Dead Ringer 2.5x20mm scope too!

Mossberg offers the first, third and fourth (but not the second) model in 20-gauge variants. They are identical to their 12-gauge cousins except they have 24” and 26” barrels, measure 43.5” and 45.5” respectively, and they’re a bit lighter.

Like the rest of Mossberg’s 500 shotguns, this group features dual extractors. Break open the gun, and spent casings await easy removal. An anti-jam elevator gets you smooth operations time and time again. There is positive steel to steel lockup. They have twin action bars. The sliding red dot tang safety is ergonomically ideal and ambidextrous. And naturally, they have nicely done forend and grip texturing.

Capacity is either 6+1 (six in the tube and one in the chamber) for 2-3/4” shells or 5+1 for 3” shells. Mossberg started operations in 1919. It’s the world’s largest maker of pump-action shotguns, America’s oldest family-owned gunmaker and is based in New Haven, Connecticut.
