The Mossberg 590A1 8+1 capacity 12-gauge, also referred to as the 9-shot, is a modern firearm built around a heavy-walled 20” long Parkerized barrel that’s backed by a 3” chamber.
The stock is synthetic. Length of pull is fixed at 14.25”. Overall length is 41.0”, and the gun weighs 7.25 pounds. The 590A1 uses cylinder bore chokes that fit flush with the barrel. These guns utilize a strapped forend, a removable cap cleanout magazine tube and a bayonet mounting lug.
As of 2020, there are an even dozen Mossberg 590A1 models in production. Model #51660 has a bead front sight. Model #51663 swaps that out with an adjustable ghost ring sight. Model #51668 is the same as #51663, but adds a four shell storage built into the stock. A fourth model (#50768) adds a rail-mounted XS ghost ring sight. The forend has M-LOK slots.
The other models are as follows. There are three M-LOK handguard equipped 7-shot (6+1 capacity) guns, a pair of MAGPUL adjustable stock 9-shot models, a 14” barrel 590A1 SPX adjustable stock, a 5+1 6-shot and finally a wooden stock “retro” model.
O.F. Mossberg & Sons, Inc. started operations in 1919 in the immediate aftermath of World War I. It was founded by Swedish immigrant (and experienced gun designer) Oscar Mossberg after his employer shuttered its doors after World War I thanks to a return to peacetime conditions. It’s now been owned by four generations of the Mossberg family and is located in New Haven, Connecticut.
