The Mossberg 590M Shockwave Mag-Fed Pump Action 10+1 capacity pump-action pistol grip firearm is a very clever piece of engineering. Mossberg redesigned the standard 590 Shockwave receiver with a strengthened magazine well, added a magazine release and incorporated some other magic to harness the benefits of swappable box magazines versus tube mag that need reloading.

To complete the kit, Mossberg created a lineup of powerful 5-round, 10-round, 15-round and 20-round double-stack polymer magazines. The key advantages here are not only greater capacity (a standard 10+1 capacity vs. 5+1 for the tube mags), but the ability to swap magazines and thus reload ultra-quickly. However, the 590M is limited to shorter 2 ¾” shells instead of 3” shells like other 590s.

The 590M combines matte black metal surfaces with all black furniture. As with other 590s, it has a raptor head grip. Net: this pump-action is imminently affordable and highly likely to please. But the main difference between this 590M model and the standard 590 Shockwave is its 15” matte blued barrel length. Overall length is 27.5” and weight with the standard 10-round magazine is 7.75 pounds. The 10-round mag measures 2.5” x 3.5” x 8.0”. In comparison, the standard 590 Shockwave is a 5+1, making it a 6-shot. Its barrel is 14.375” long, overall length is 26.37”, and it weighs 5.3 pounds.

On top of the 590M is a gold bead front sight. The pump-action has a sure-grip black synthetic corn cob forend that also has a strap for even better contact. At the other end is a classic black synthetic raptor grip that Mossberg affixes to the entire 590 Shockwave series. The raptor grip’s shape is eye-catching, but its rounded contour is also designed to minimize felt recoil. This gun’s magazine cap is serrated for a good grip. The gun also has sling swivel studs in front and back.

Let’s revisit the magazine. It has a semi-waffle exterior. This stabilizing rib structure adds rigidity, but it also looks cool in a great example of we appreciate aesthetics made by form follows function. The stabilizing rigs mate directly into the receiver’s magwell. Moreover, the feed lips are hardened steel, and there are overmolded steel shell ramps so that loading is smooth. The magazine also has an anti-cant rounded follower and a removable floor plate for easier access when it’s time to clean. And when you’re ready to swap mags, there is an ambidextrous circular release button on either side just ahead of the front trigger guard.

The 590M and all other 590 Shockwaves feature an anodized aluminum receiver, positive steel-to-steel lockup, twin action bars, an ambidextrous tang safety, and a smooth operating anti-jam elevator. Their dual extractors mean spent casings await easy removal when you break open the gun. They also have a cleanout tube and a drilled and tapped receiver.
