The Mossberg 702 Plinkster is a relatively affordable high-content .22 LR. There is a range of three models all built around 18” blued barrels with a 1:16” twist ratio, black synthetic stocks and adjustable fiber optic sights. The standard gun is a 10+1 with a 14.25” length of pull. It’s 37” long overall and weighs just 4.0 pounds.
The second model is a 25+1 capacity version of the first. It comes with an accessory magazine loader. And the third model is back to the standard model’s 10+1 capacity, but it has a 12.25” length of pull and consequently a 35” overall length.
The 702 Plinksters have nice lines. They have curved pistol grips bridging the forend/receiver to the buttstock. The buttstock has a thick skeletonized rubber recoil pad. Both the forend and grip are stippled for assured hold.
The front and rear sights are fully adjustable for windage and elevation. The sights are 3-dot fiber optic. The rear sights are green and the front sight is red. Many people love the color contrast and swear by it. The receiver is already set up to work with 3/8” scope mounts. The barrels are free-floating.
O.F. Mossberg & Sons, Inc. started operations in 1919 in the immediate aftermath of World War I. It was founded by Swedish immigrant (and experienced gun designer) Oscar Mossberg after his employer shuttered its doors after World War I thanks to a return to peacetime conditions. It’s now been owned by four generations of the Mossberg family and is located in New Haven, Connecticut.
