The Mossberg MMR 5.56mm NATO/223 Rem semi-automatic AR-type carbine takes Mossberg architecture and mates it to the Magpul parts bin. The Mossberg Modern Rifle (MMR) was introduced in 2016 and comes in three versions.
The base version model 65075 has a 16.25” free-floating button-rifled barrel with a 1 to 8” twist, a 13 7/8” length of pull non-adjustable stock, 13” long matte black M-LOK-type handguard and 10-round magazine. Stepping up, model 65076 adds a 6-position adjustable stock with an expansive 10.5” to 14.25” length of pull and an A2-type birdcage muzzle brake. Finally, the apex MMR model 65074 includes a 30-round magazine in lieu of the 10-round one. Weight for all three is around 6.75 pounds.
MMRs have a matte black phosphate/anodized finish for improved protection against wear and tear and the elements. They include a full-length Picatinny accessory rail for the included adjustable target sights or later upgrades to optics and other accessories and use a direct-impingement gas system.
The M-LOK handguard is interesting and, with its forward leaning ship’s bow profile, it’s aesthetically pleasing. While it has the common raised roof octagonal cross-section, it has M-LOK holes in all seven directions other than at 12 o’clock, which is occupied by the aforementioned Picatinny rail.
The Magpul components include a slightly convex Magpul MOE polymer trigger guard. Framed inside the trigger guard is a single-stage trigger. Behind it is a Magpul MOE+ grip that combines a rubber overmolding plus a beavertail backstrap for improved comfort and handling. The grip is 1.2” thick, has horizontal serrations at front and back and features light texturing along the sides. It’s also hollow permitting storage through its bottom cap.
