The Remington 11-87 is a 12-gauge pressure-compensated autoloading (semi-automatic) shotgun. Its gas-operated system uses gas exhaust to cycle the gun, eject the shell casing and load. Of course, this process also reduces felt recoil.

As the 11-87 is a Remington, it’s not surprising that it has a family pedigree. The Remington name has been used to make guns since 1816! The 11-87 descends from the recoil operated hammerless Remington 11 designed by John F. Browning. The 11 was America’s first autoloading shotgun. It spanned 12, 16 and 20-gauge, production from 1905 to 1945 and the result was 850,000 units. These were offered in various grades including standard, riot, police, special, trap, tournament, expert and premier.

The 11-87 first saw production exclusively in 12-gauge guise starting in 1987. The 20-gauge models joined production in 1999. And now the 11-87 still remains in steady production over three decades later. A benefit of this long production run is there are plenty of accessories available for further optimization/configuration to one’s personal tastes.

There have been several dozen variations over the years constantly satisfying various niches and keeping up awareness. For 2020, Remington had three models. First, the Remington 11-87 Sportsman Field has a wooden forend and wooden stock. Second, the Remington 11-87 Sportsman Black Synthetic with a black synthetic forend and black synthetic stock. And third, the Remington 11-87 Sportsman Compact Black Synthetic, which is, as the name says, a compact version of the second model. In all cases, the styling is classic.

The guns have nice hatching, but unlike many other similar shotguns, the hatching is not in pennants, but in nice outlines that include an elegant fleur-de-lys. The cross-bolt safety is at the back of the trigger guard behind the trigger. It uses red dot and white dot indicators.
