The Remington Model 1100 autoloading shotgun is ridiculously popular with trap/skeet/sport shooters because it hits the bullseye on price, reliability, availability and features. The type originated as a gas operated 4+1 capacity 5-shot arm introduced in 1963. Remington made millions of them before the company filed for bankruptcy a second time in 2020, shuttering operations.

The Remington 1100 is available in 12, 20 and 28 gauges as well as .410 bore. This shotgun is credited with establishing the era of the reliable, highly successful gas operated auto-loading shotguns. In fact the Remington 1100 remains one of the best-selling semi-automatic shotguns in US history. Additionally, in 1978, it set the semi-automatic shotgun record for most shells fired without cleaning, malfunction or parts at 24,000 rounds.

The 1100 is a spiritual descendant of the earlier Remington 11 and Remington 11-48 model lines. Model 11-48 production ran 20 years from 1949 to 1969 and made 450,000 in that time.

The Model 1100 debuted as a 12-gauge. The rugged 1100 distinguished itself early on as one of the first semi-automatic shotguns to reduce recoil significantly while being lightweight and reliable. Remington rolled out other gauges over time. 16-gauge and 20-gauge followed in 1964 while 28-gauge and .410-gauge joined the family in 1969.

Remington made a dazzling number of 1100 models (or “Grades” per Remington). The 1100 Field was the standard model. The trap model was the 1100 TB. 1100 SA and SB were for skeet with the B having a better quality of wood. Other models included the 1100 D for Tournaments, 1100 F “Premier” and many more.

Remington has provided for left-handed shooters with 12-gauge and 20-gauge models, a youth gun in 20-gauge, 1100s with synthetic stocks, the 1100 Tac-2 with a synthetic stock and pistol grip, a 50th Anniversary released in 2013 and a 200th Anniversary (of Remington) released in 2016.

While there are too many different Model 1100s to detail in this space, the aforementioned all-black Remington Model 1100 Tac-2 (or sometimes written as Tactical 2) 12-gauge is an engaging example. The 6+1 shotgun centers on an 18” barrel chambered for 2 3/4" and that comes with a fixed improved cylinder choke. The gun has a bead sight. The Tac-2 receives a multi-step process including a chemical dip for its uniform blasted black oxide finish.

The Tac’s receiver is drilled and tapped so you can add a scope. In back is an R3 recoil pad and the gun has a sling swivel studs. Both the forend and stock are synthetic making the gun only 7.75 pounds.
