The sleek Remington Model 14 pump-action side-ejection repeating rifle remains a top selling pump-action gun though its production run was decades ago from 1912/1913 to the 1930s! This straight stock beautiful solid-breech gun has hammerless, takedown engineering and was developed to harness the power of high-power rimless centerfire cartridges. The Model 14 had American walnut forends and stocks and plenty of beautiful blued metal parts like the barrel and tube magazine.
Remington had several Model 14 variants it called grades. Included were the 14A Standard, 14C Special, 14D Peerless, and 14F Premier. Model 14s were chambered for high-powered .25 REM, .30 REM, .32 REM and .35 REM and had a 22” length barrel. Model 14R carbines had an 18” barrel.
In all cases, the side ejection port was a great solution to smoke rising to obscure sightlines and kept empty shells from hitting in unwanted places. Many of the guns bear the familiar REM-UMC mark, which stands for Remington Arms Union Metallic Cartridge Company.
The Model 14 was designed by John Pedersen. This innovative Nebraskan son of Danish immigrants is less well-known than John Browning, but even Browning considered him the greatest gun designer. That was very modest of Browning, but in any case, Pedersen had dozens of patents.
Remington also added Model 14 ½ versions to fire .38-40 and .44-40 ammo. The Model 14 1/2A Standard had the 22” length barrel while the Model 14 1/2R had the 18” carbine barrel. The various guns weighed 6.0 to 7.0 pounds depending on chambering and configuration.
Remington built about 125,000 Model 14s in different grades and variants. All featured a white metal bead front sight and an adjustable open rear sight. These guns were made in Ilion, New York.
