Remington 597 History & Specs

The Remington 597 is available in models chambered for .22 Long Rifle, .22 WMR and .17 HMR ammunition and has been in production since 1997. With its long history in the firearms industry, Remington set out to craft a line of semi-automatic rifles that could compete with the Ruger 10/22 and the Marlin 795. Built in Remington's Mayfield, Kentucky plant, the Remington 597 utilizes a unique bolt-guidance system and comes in a variety of models and configurations.

With a standard barrel length of 20 inches, the Remington 597 comes with either a laminated or synthetic stock. The receiver is built with integral dovetail mounts and an optional weaver-style scope base can be mounted to pre-drilled mount points. Early Remington 597 magazines were plastic and caused feeding problems that would increase with age, but since 2000 magazines have been made from investment cast aluminum alloy, improving their performance greatly. Today's improved magazines are available for purchase separately so that owners of older Remington 597s can also use them.
