The bolt-action Remington “Varmint” guns break down into two subgroups: the Model 700 SPS Varmint and Model 700 Varmint Stainless Fluted (SF). The first group has a heavy contour profile 26” barrel mated to an SPS Varmint stock. The second group has a fluted barrel, which helps in heat dissipation and lowers weight. It also has a target-style concave barrel crown.

Each has a stainless-steel barrel docked to a black straight stock with gray overmolding on the forend and pistol grip. Each has three swivel sling studs.

The SPS Varmints come in .204 Ruger, .22-250 Remington, .223 Remington, .243 Winchester and .308 Winchester. All feature a matte blued carbon steel 26” barrel, a 13.5” length of pull, 46.5” overall length and 8.5-pound weight.

The Varmint SFs come in .22-250 Remington, .223 Remington, 243 Winchester, .220 Swift and .308 Winchester. Specifications are similar to the previous group except their fluted barrels are 416 stainless steel that’s nicely polished. Overall length is 45.25”.

There is also a more classically styled Model 700 Varmint with a laminate stock and blued barrel. The stock has a Monte Carlo profile and two swivel sling studs.

Remington operated over 200 years before shuttering for bankruptcy in 2020. A mainstay was the very popular lineup of Remington 700 bolt-action rifles in constant production from 1962. Staggeringly, Remington made over 5,000,000. The 700 was the basis for Remington 721 and 722 sniper guns and was made in the town of Ilion, New York.

Though the 700 lineup has been around for decades, Remington has reinvested in improved tooling to make the weapon to tighter tolerances and standards.

The entire 700 series shares some excellent characteristics. For instance, their conical tactical bolt knobs feature textured surrounds. The barrels are cold hammer forged for increased strength. They also have precision 5R rifling for less deformation and easier cleaning. For safety and durability, 700s have Remington’s Three Rings of Steel design. This means the bolt face has a recess that encloses the cartridge head, the barrel surrounds the bolt shroud and the barrel threads into the hardened steel receiver.

At the bottom of each 700 is a crisp Remington X-Mark Pro user-adjustable trigger that’s factory set to 3.5 pounds of pull pressure, but users can adjust it from 3 to 5 pounds. It is nickel-plated, corrosion resistant and housed within a glove-friendly oversized trigger guard. In back is a Supercell Recoil Pad that soaks up felt recoil by 54% compared to other similar pads.

Remington 700s were Made in USA.
