The centerfire Remington 700 XCR bolt-action rifle series launched in 2005. The second generation XCR II rifles launched in 2010. XCR stands for Xtreme Conditions Rifle. Remington designed the XCR for extreme weather and extreme conditions with an emphasis on rugged durability and superb performance, mating 416 stainless steel materials to a matte non-reflective black TriNyte finish that functions as an all-weather corrosion control system.

When the Model 700 XCR II launched in 2010, Remington made it available in thirteen barrel/caliber combinations. In 24” length barrels, you could get XCRs in 25-06 Remington, 270 Winchester, 280 Remington, 30-06 Springfield, 7mm Remington Magnum, 300 WSM, 300 Winchester Magnum or 338 Winchester Magnum. You had 7mm Remington Ultra Magnum, 300 Remington Ultra Magnum and 338 Remington Ultra Magnum in 26” barrels. Finally, there were two 24” rifle-sighted barrel options: 375 H&H and 375 Remington Ultra Magnum.

These groups had the following characteristics. The Magnum and Ultra Magnum had 3+1 capacities while the others were 4+1. The 26” barrel length Ultra Magnums were a very imposing 46.5” long overall. The 24” barrel guns were 44.5” long.

In 2020, production ended with four models. The 4+1 capacity 308 Winchester Model 700 XCR Compact Tactical had a 20” barrel, 39.25” overall length, HS Precision Aramid Fiber Reinforced stock and weighed 7.5 pounds. The Model 700 XCR Tactical Long Range had three models with 26” barrels, 45.75” overall lengths, Bell & Carlson Aramid Fiber Reinforced stocks and 8.5-pound weights. This group also included another 4+1 capacity 308 Winchester. The other two were a 3+1 capacity 300 Winchester Magnum and a 5+1 capacity 338 Lapua Magnum. All four had a 1.25” drop at comb and a 1.5” drop at heel.

TriNyte takes the stainless-steel barrel, action, bolt, bolt head and trigger. It first applies electroless nickel-plating that’s then covered by a micro-thin satin-finished black PVD (physical vapor deposition) corrosion and abrasion-resistant protective layer.

XCRs use an olive drab green synthetic stock. It has black soft touch Hogue overmolding on the forend and pistol grip for secure holds in any weather.

Remington operated over 200 years before shuttering for bankruptcy in 2020. A mainstay was the very popular Remington 700, in constant production since 1962. From 1962 to 2020, Remington made over 5,000,000. The 700 fathered the Remington 721 and 722 sniper guns. The series was made in Ilion, New York.

Though the bolt-action 700-rifle family has been around for decades, Remington has reinvested in improved tooling to make the weapon to tighter tolerances and standards.

The entire 700 series shares some excellent characteristics. For instance, their barrels are cold hammer forged for increased strength. Their conical tactical bolt knobs enjoy nicely textured surrounds. They also have precision 5R rifling that results in less deformation and easier cleaning. For safety and durability, 700s have Remington’s Three Rings of Steel design. This means the bolt face has a recess that encloses the cartridge head, the barrel surrounds the bolt shroud and the barrel threads into the hardened steel receiver.

On top, the 700s are drilled and tapped for scope mounts. At the bottom of each 700 is a crisp Remington X-Mark Pro user-adjustable trigger that’s factory set to 3.5 pounds of pull pressure, but users can adjust it from 3 to 5 pounds. It is nickel-plated, corrosion resistant and housed within a glove-friendly oversized trigger guard. There is also a hinged floorplate and sling swivel studs. In back is Remington’s own Supercell Recoil Pad that soaks up felt recoil by 54% compared to other similar pads.

These much-appreciated traits and characteristics help explain the remarkable popularity of the Made in USA Remington 700 family of bolt-action rifles.
