The Remington 700 CDL bolt-action centerfire rifle debuted in 2004 as an evolution of the earlier Remington 700 ADL and 700 BDL that in turn debuted in the early 1960s. The 700 ADL was the base model and the BDL its deluxe counterpart. Per Remington, the CDL stands for Classic Deluxe, but perhaps the more realistic reason for the name is that it simply flows well after ADL and BDL.

All three models are beautiful with traditional, classic looks. When a layperson pictures a bolt-action gun, they’re probably imagining something like these. Both the ADL and BDL have been covered elsewhere here at www.GunBroker.com, but compared to them, the CDL had some significant changes.

The first two had fixed internal magazines. The CDL had a removable box mag. The ADL and BDL had a high-cheek comb Monte Carlo stock while the CDL had a lower straight comb stock. It kept the BDL’s black forend cap and added a significantly thicker recoil-damping buttpad. Where the BDL had a beautiful skipline pattern on the checkering, the CDLs had more traditional fine grain checkering in pennants gracing its lovely American walnut.

Like the BDL, the CDL also features Remington’s adjustable X-Mark Pro trigger. This trigger has a factory-set 3.5-pound pull weight, but you can adjust it anywhere from 3 to 5 pounds.

The BDL has a gloss blued barrel while most CDLs had matte ones. But that changed with last CDL. This was the 2008 Model 700 CDL with High Polish Blued finish. You could get it in 270 Win, 30-06 Springfield and 7mm Remington Mag.

The CDL has a nice medley of design traits and features including a black forend tip and matching black grip cap, laser cut checkering across the handholds on the forend and pistol grip, and an almost whimsical jeweled bolt body. CDLs have a two-position safety and front and rear sling swivel studs; The receiver top is drilled and tapped making mounting a scope easy.

For safety and durability, 700s have Remington’s Three Rings of Steel design. This means the bolt face has a recess that encloses the cartridge head, the barrel surrounds the bolt shroud and the barrel threads into the hardened steel receiver that’s milled from a single, solid bar of steel.

The high-polished hammer forged carbon steel barrels are 24” for 4+1 capacity 270 Winchester and 30-06 Springfield and 26” for the 3+1 capacity 7mm Remington Magnum. Overall length is 20.5” longer for each, and thus 44.5” and 46.5” respectively. These guns weigh 7.5 pounds and 7.625 pounds respectively. The stock is a beautifully satin-finished American Walnut.
