The 4-pound 14+1 capacity .22 LR Remington Nylon 66 semi-automatic was the company’s first polymer stock rifle. This transformative .22 LR happened in collaboration with DuPont. They developed the rugged, lightweight and resilient structural Nylon 66 polymer (often referred to as Zytel) that Remington used for the (simulated wood) stock and receiver!

The 66 debuted in 1959 starting at $49.95 (about $450 today). Lightweight, rugged, all-weather, accurate, handsome and affordable, the gun was a massive hit. By the time production ended three decades later, Remington had made over a million.

It’s hard to imagine how extraordinary this gun was. The stock was extreme tested for heat, dust, rain and freezing weather conditions. It passed all with flying colors. It was also chip resistant, waterproof and warp-proof. And the “wood” looked real enough; it even had fine line grip checkering on the forend and grip that normally would have required an artisan to craft. Thanks to DuPont’s Nylon 66 and the joys of injection molding, it happened like magic.

The 19.5” length barrel was 4140 ordnance steel. Length-of-pull was 13 5/8”, drop was 2 3/8” and overall length was 38 1/2". The tube magazine wasn’t under the barrel, but rather ran from the buttstock to the chamber. Ammo was loaded through the buttstock by removing the butt plate.

Remington provided white spacers for the forend cap, grip cap and buttstock. The forend flanks were emblazoned by white diamond inserts. The tube magazine held 14 rounds.

The gun came standard with a tang safety, fixed blade front sight and a rear sight adjustable for windage and elevation. Remington grooved it for tip-off scope mounts. The 4-pound weight made it easy to aim and lug around.

The polymer stock was coupled with a polymer receiver! The gun used three-point bedding for excellent accuracy. The design had friction-free parts on greaseless nylon bearings. So, no lubrication needed!

The gun had three main color schemes: Mohawk Brown, the greenish-brown Seneca Green and the deluxe Apache Black that also included chrome plating on the receiver and barrel. The 66-GS was a Gallery Short model that had a 20-round tubular magazine and used .22 Short ammo.
