The full size Remington RP45 .45 Auto semi-automatic pistol takes the tried and true M1911A1 style and evolves it into a lighter, more affordable, heavier-hitting gun. The result is simultaneously classic and modern, retro and contemporary.

It’s worth quickly looking at the RP45’s features and then make a quick compare and contrast against Remington’s R1 1911. So first, the RP45’s features.

The RP45 is a PVD finished black polymer frame with three dot dovetailed sights that are adjustable for drift. It’s well thought out ergonomically with front and rear slide serrations, a deep undercut behind the trigger guard and long frame cuts behind it, a tall beavertail keyed to an optimal grip angle permitting grip closer to recoil axis for more control and faster follow on shots, etc. Additionally, the entire frame is gently texturized, enhancing grip and cutting glare.

The gun comes with a three-slot Picatinny rail under the muzzle and with three different backstraps to optimize it for the most comfort. The takedown lever is on the left, the magazine release can be set on either side and the slide lock is ambidextrous.

Key dimensions are overall length 7.91", width 1.27", height 5.56" and barrel length 4.5". Weight comes in at 26.4 ounces. The single-action safety trigger’s pull is smooth and crisp at 5.5 to 8 pounds.

The RP45 has three variants, all with easy loading double-stack magazines. The first makes for a 10+1 capacity gun while the other two are 15+1s. The difference between the two 15+1s is one has daytime sights while the other has Tritium night sights.

Now for some quick contrasts of the RP45 with the comparable Remington 1911 R1 Commander. Both fire .45 Auto ammunition via a 4.5” barrel and have about the same dimensions except, the steel 1911 R1 Commander has a lighter 3.5 to 5 pound trigger pull, thinner grip due to its single-stack magazine design, 7+1 capacity and weighs 36 ounces, meaning substantially more. The 1911 R1 lacks an accessory rail or a safety trigger, but does have a grip safety. The RP45’s beavertail curve is above the trigger guard while the 1911’s is lower, almost directly behind the trigger’s center.

Combining hard-hitting power and lightweight frame with a relatively low velocity makes the RP45 ideal for home defense. Finally, these guns are made in Huntsville, Alabama, so they’re Made in USA.
