The History of the Remington Rifle

The Remington Arms Company celebrated its 200th anniversary in 2016, marking the anniversary of the day founder Eliphalet Remington crafted a single-barrel rifle using iron from his father's blacksmith forge in Ilion, New York. A gunsmith in nearby Utica helped him fabricate the rest into a rifle. As word spread about the quality of Eliphalet's rifle, the business grew too.

Remington's early expansion helped pave the way for the company today. The first armory was built in 1848 to manufacture rifles and carbines for the government.

The company has also been a pioneer in firearms technology. It produced John Browning's design for an auto loading shotgun, the Model 11, in 1906. It introduced game-load shot shells 16 years later as a replacement to load varieties. In 1950, the company released one of the first pump-action shotguns, the Model 870 Wingmaster.

The Model 700 series of Remington rifles were introduced in 1962. The bolt-action rifle remains one of the most popular hunting rifles to this day. The company's current corporate headquarters is in Madison, North Carolina, north of Greensboro approaching the Virginia border.
