Introduced in 2010, the gas-operated Remington Versa Max autoloading 12-gauge shotgun can interchangeably operate 2 ¾”, 3”, and 3 ½” shells. It’s a 3+1 capacity shotgun for the first two sizes and 2+1 capacity for the 3 ½” shells. Remington designed the Versa Max to be reliable, accurate, easy to use and to self-regulate for different loads. Stock drop and cast, comb height, comb cast were all adjustable and recoil is impressively soft. All this versatility has made the gun very popular and justifies the name as far more than just hyped up marketing.

There are four Versa Max models. Two use a 28” barrel (overall length 49 15/16”; weight 7.7 pounds) and two have a slightly shorter 26” barrel (overall length 47 15/16”; weight 7.5 pounds). For each pair, one is all matte black and one is camo. In 28”, the camo gun is swathed in Mossy Oak Duck Blind. Of the 26” barrel guns, again one is matte black and the other features Realtree AP camo.

Materials are excellent and include a 4140 alloy steel hammer forged barrel with an eye-directing ventilated rib that narrows at the muzzle to just 7 mm for easy sighting and a lightweight yet strong aluminum receiver that’s anodized for corrosion resistance.

The receiver is drilled and tapped so you can mount optics, but the Versa Max comes standard with Tritium/Litepipe HiViz sights. These bright tactical sights are pretty slick as you can easily swap out light pipes to get different colors (green, red, white and black). Moreover, the light pipes provide 24-hour illumination, and it’s ridiculously cheap to swap out colors. They attach via rugged machined one-piece steel bases.

The matte black gun barrels are TriNyte PVD coated and the camo models are nickel-plated. In either case, they are nickel-plated inside. The gas components are also nickel-Teflon plated for slick operations and durability. Also the magazine tube is stainless steel and the springs are nickel-plated.

This good looking single-action gun has a crossbolt safety located at the top rear of the trigger guard. It adds supplemental safety protection against accidental discharges. It also has a passive inertia firing pin system. The VersaPort gas system was self-regulating and could self-adjust for different loads based on ports that were covered or uncovered by the length of the shell. It’s an elegantly simple system that’s genius, really. Shorter shells leave more holes uncovered thus permitting more gas to be used to cycle the system, while longer shells cover more holes thus allowing less gas to be used to cycle the system.

The cartridge release, bolt release and operating handle are on the right. However, the safety can be reversed by a gunsmith or a Remington center to set the gun up for left-handers. The gun has swivel studs and an oversize trigger guard for cold weather gloved operations.

The vent rib had nice aesthetics with a set of ramped pylons of differing heights and different lateral spacings gently drawing the eye forward along the barrel. The receiver had a satin black finish. Its height integrated perfectly with the barrel/magazine/forend assembly in front and the stock/grip assembly in back. Almost everything is thus black except the trigger and various releases.

The nice looking matte black synthetic stock features soft-touch rubber overmolding on the forend and pistol grips.

The tube magazine’s normal capacity is three 2 3/4” or 3” shells or two 3 1/2” shells, but the gun also shipped new with a magazine plug to limit the mag to just two shells and shipped with four choke tubes.

Remington’s Versa Stock architecture permitted flexibility and comfortable use for users of all shapes and sizes. The gun came standard with three length of pull spacers to place between the butt and the generously padded rubber butt pad. These spacers could be used to vary length of pull from 14.25” to 15.25”. You could adjust comb heights by swapping comb inserts. This allowed using a standard height of 1 7/16” or moving up to 1 7/8” or even 2 1/8”. Cast could also be adjusted right or left by 1/4”.

This gun was also designed for easy DIY maintenance. You could remove the gas pistons, take down the barrel, easily remove the trigger assembly and more.
