First developed in the 1500s, for many years revolvers were simply curiosities in Europe, rare and expensive to build. The revolving chamber design enabled a shooter to shoot several rounds without reloading, a process that took pistols and long arms of the period a considerable amount of time. By the 1800s technology and revolver design had advanced enough to make revolvers common weapons for more than just the wealthy.
Most revolvers both old and new are chambered for six rounds, giving rise to the slang term "six-shooter." A variety of revolvers have been made however with anything from 3 to 24 chambers. Each time the hammer of a revolver is cocked the cylinder turns to align the hammer and barrel with the round in the next chamber. Single action revolvers require the user to pull the hammer back with either his/her free hand or thumb, while double action revolvers have hammers that move back when the trigger is pulled and release when the trigger is released.
Although semi automatic pistols were developed in the early 20th century it would be more than 50 years before they supplanted revolvers as the go-to choice for law enforcement, military and civilian handgun markets. Though semi automatics are smaller and flatter, allowing for easier concealed carry, they were considered less reliable than revolvers until the advent of modern designs such as those from Beretta and Glock in the 1970s and 80s. Revolvers are still popular as law enforcement backup weapons and among hunters in the US. Additionally hobbies like Cowboy Action Shooting and reenactments keep the demand for historically accurate revolvers high.
