What is a Rifle Stock?

Of course many people, even those with little or no firearms experience, could probably point out the stock on a rifle, but how did rifle design develop the idea of the rifle stock? What different kinds of rifle stocks are available today? It turns out that the stock of a firearm can alternatively be known as the shoulder stock, the buttstock or simply, the butt. The stock is designed to be held or braced against the shooter's body during firing. Early hand canons needed to be lit and aimed by hand. When matchlocks freed up one hand from lighting duties the shoulder stock was developed to brace against the firer as they used both hand to aim.Stock styles can vary widely. One-piece rifle stocks are often seen on bolt action rifles, while break open shotguns and lever action rifles commonly feature stocks comprised of two pieces. Sliding or folding stocks are designed to make the rifle more compact during transport or in storage, but can extend and be braced against the shoulder for firing. Full grip stocks are often seen on military-grade firearms and include a separate piece for the grip, while semi-grip stocks are more common on sporting rifles and provide a more diagonal angle for the shooter's trigger hand.
