The Rock River Arms Lightweight Mountain Rifle LAR-15M is a 5.56mm NATO and .223 caliber semi-automatic. This tantalizing 30+1 capacity is of the larger LAR-15M family, but it’s optimized for portability as weight and bulk are enemies of mountain climbing.

This AR-type is generally all matte black. Its upper receiver is a forged A4 with a long MIL-STD-1913 Picatinny rail ridging attached to a forged RRA LAR-15M lower receiver. In front is a 14” long RRA Lightweight Aluminum Mountain Rifle Handguard. It sports a full-length accessory top rail that runs continuously to the rail atop the receiver.

The handguard is the gun’s easy conversation starter. It’s a good looking, matte black, functional piece of work. It has five rows of eight circular ports: one on each side, one on the bottom and two in between (thus covering 3, 4:30, 6, 7:30 and 9 o’clock sides). The top rail has four long spans bridging its vertical pylons.

The handguard also has three triple-slot accessory rails. Contained within is an RRA Proprietary Lightweight Low Profile Gas Block and corresponding gas tube. Taken together, the handguard, gas block and tube weigh only 18.3 ounces.

Half-hidden inside the matte black handguard is a matte black 1:9” twist 16” chrome moly barrel. And in front, the barrel wears a birdcage A2 flash hider with a 1/2"–28 TPI thread.

Moving down, you have an RRA winter trigger guard that’s oversized for winter gloves. And within is an RRA two-stage trigger. Anchored below is a Hogue rubber grip with nice texturing and a trio of finger grooves.

In back is an RRA Operator CAR stock. This versatile component is lever-actuated and collapsible with six positions. It includes an integral non-slip textured buttpad, two watertight battery storage tubes and a receiver extension. The six positions provide excellent personalization. The gun is only 32.5” overall and weighs just 6.2 pounds empty.

The combination of components provides 1 MOA accuracy at 100 yards. You can also get this gun with a fixed RRA Operator A2 stock. Weight is specified as the same and length is fixed at 38”. Each comes with a 10-round magazine.
