Rock River Arms Varmint A4 is actually a lineup of five models. Four are rifled with a 1:8” twist ratio. They are the 16 Inch Varmint A4, 18 Inch Varmint A4, 20 Inch Varmint A4 and the 24 Inch Varmint A4. Finally, there is another 24 Inch Varmint A4, but it has a 1:12” twist ratio. These guns have a default color of matte-black, but they also have a staggering 32 different Rockote color options! Examples are brick red, charcoal, copper, FDE, gold, light gray, lime green, OD, pink and white. But there are plenty more!

As you might guess, the quintuplets share many characteristics. All are chambered for .223 Wylde for 5.56 and .223 calibers. Their barrels are stainless steel with a bull profile. They have low-profile gas blocks and forged upper and lower receivers. The upper is an A4 while the lower is an RRA LAR-15. All five also have light 3.5 pull pressure RRA two-stage varmint triggers housed in an RRA Winter trigger guard, a classic A2 buttstock and comfortable Hogue rubber pistol grip with nice finger recesses. In each case, the upper receiver and handguard are crested by a unified Picatinny rail that runs the entire length of both components.

Breaking down the differences between the five, we have the following:

The 16” barrel version has an 11” RRA lightweight free float M-LOK compatible handguard that’s brilliantly skeletonized. The stainless steel barrel’s color contrast peering out between the latticework is very attractive. Overall length is 34.25” and the gun weighs 8.0 pounds. The 18” model gains two inches in handguard and overall length and weighs 8.4 pounds. The 20” has a 17” handguard, 38.25” overall length and weighs in at 9.4 pounds. Finally, the two 24” barrel guns have a 20” long handguard, 42.25” overall length and weigh 10.2 pounds!

The guns have threaded and smooth barrel options. The threaded variants ship with a classic birdcage A2 flash hider. Other options abound. Want a different stock? RRA offers its in-house stock or the MAGPUL PRS stock. Barrels can be had with eye-popping bead blasting. There is a chrome version of the two-stage trigger. There are half a dozen grip options, half a dozen charging handles, etc. Between these options, size and color, there are thousands of combinations! Let no one say the Rock River Arms Varmint A4 isn’t expansive in its offerings.
