The Rock River Arms (RRA) Varmint A4 and Varmint EOP are LAR-15M AR-15s with a .223 Wylde chamber that accommodates both 5.56mm NATO and .223 calibers. Each model is a matte black 20+1 capacity semi-automatic AR-type built around a stainless-steel barrel ranging from 16” to 24” in length.

Let’s visit the two models in order of increasing sophistication. The Varmint A4 is almost all black except the stainless-steel barrel. The upper receiver is a forged A4-type upper crested by a long accessory rail. The lower receiver is a forged RRA LAR-15M RRA uses on many of its other guns. The latticework handguard is hard coat anodized 6061 aluminum with a top MIL-STD-1913 Picatinny rail and M-LOK flank slots.

The gun has a matte black Hogue rubber grip with nice texturing and three crescent finger grooves. It feels good; it looks good. Moving down, you get a flat trigger guard bridging the magwell to grip. Inside is an RRA two-stage trigger. In back you have a fixed A2 stock and a sling swivel at its heel. The totality provides an impressive 3/4 MOA accuracy at 100 yards. The gun comes standard with a 20-round mag.

You can get the Varmint A4 with 16”, 18”, 20”, 24” barrels. The first three have 1:8” twist ratios. The 24” is available in 1:8” or with a slower 1:12” twist rifled bore. Each is 18.25” longer overall than its barrel. Thus, they measure 34.25”, 36.25”, 38.25” and 42.25” respectively. Their handguard measurements aren’t so neat. The 16” has a 11” handguard. The other handguards are 13”, 17” and 20” respectively.

The impressive barrel design is stainless steel that’s air gauged and cryogenically treated. The bull barrel profile grows from a .92” diameter at the low-profile gas block to just over 1” at the handguard. The shortest of these guns weighs 8.0 pounds, and the 24” barrel versions weigh 10.2 pounds.

Second, the Varmint EOP is the same as the Varmint A4 except the upper receiver differs by using the Forged EOP - Elevated Optical Platform upper receiver. As the name indicates, it uses an elevated Picatinny rail rather than the standard one. The rail sits on three pylons. The barrel lengths, handguards and everything else are the same. This configuration adds .2 pounds so that the weights range from 8.2 to 10.4 pounds.

RRA is no mere integrator, but a proper manufacturer based in Colona, Illinois. Thus, many key components are made inhouse. And these guns are rightfully proclaimed Made in USA.
