The Ruger American Rimfire is a quintet of affordable but accurate and reliable 10+1 capacity rimfire bolt-action rifles for .22 LR, 9+1 .22 WMR and 9+1 .17 HMR calibers. The American Rimfire Standard, Rimfire Compact, Rimfire Wood Stock, Rimfire Target and Rimfire Long-Range Target span a wonderful series of stocks, color finishes, barrels and features. There seems to be something to please almost anyone.

These guns feature a two-position Fire/Safe red-dot tang safety that’s textured and ergonomically reveals the letters S for Safe and a fiery red F for fire. Nearby, the action features a single-piece 60-degree throw bolt arm that ends in a nearly spherical bolt knob.

Ruger machines these gorgeous receivers to include an integrated 3/8" rimfire scope base. Integrating the scope bases does wonders for stability and simplification. These receivers are also drilled and tapped for Weaver #12 bases.

With these guns, you’re getting 18” or 22” length cold hammer forged barrels that are rifled, highly accurate and durable. Many end in a 1/2”-28 TPI thread.

The Ruger Marksman Adjustable trigger can be set from 3.0 to 5.0 pounds of pull pressure. The trigger is crisp and predictable.

Maintenance is easy. Thanks to the Power Bedding integral bedding block system that free-floats the barrel, the barrel, action and trigger combination anchors to the stock by just two ventral hex-head screws.

The stock module for the synthetic stocks is a really clever feature. You can swap out the top/back of the stock by tapping it out using a non-marring tool and replace it with one of a different height. These guns come with two different interchangeable stock modules so you can swap between iron sights and a scope. The modules lock in place with the rear swivel stud. That’s genius, right?

A great thing about these bolt-actions is they use the same detachable magazines as other Rugers. Thus .22 LR models use the 10-round BX-1 rotary magazines. They also work with BX-25, BX-25x2 and BX-15 mags. The .17 HMR and .22 WMR use the longer and wider JMX-1 rotary magazine. Both magazines are flush-mount, but Ruger also offers higher capacity extended magazines. The magazine release is extended, making swapping mags easy and intuitive.

Additional features include a soft buttpad in back and sling swivel studs.

Let’s briefly survey the five different stocks.

The American Rimfire Standard is a classically styled synthetic stock. You can get it in matte black with black barrel, matte black with a stainless barrel or Go Wild Camo I-M Brush with burnt bronze Cerakote on the barrel, or other color schemes. Length-of-pull (LOP) is 13.75”. Overall length is 38.37” with the 18” barrel and radial ported flash suppressor or 37” with the Williams Fiber Optic front sight and adjustable rear sight or 37” with no sights but with a one-piece aluminum scope rail over the ejection port. These weigh about 5.9 pounds, depending on configuration.

The youth-friendly Rimfire Compact is similar except it uses a 12.5” LOP and 35.75” overall length. Weight is typically 5.3 pounds.

The Rimfire Wood Stock is like the Standard Stock but made of wood! This adds about .2 pounds of weight per model.

Moving up, the Rimfire Target guns feature a bull barrel, a knurled thread protector, one-piece aluminum scope rail and a beautiful wood laminate stock that has nice colored bands. When viewed from the side profile, the bands evoke topographic contour maps. These guns have 18” barrels, a 13.75” LOP and weigh about 6.8 pounds.

Finally, the Rimfire Long-Range Target is like the Rimfire Target but sits on a larger thumbhole stock. These guns perhaps look longer than the standard Rimfire Target guns, but actually, they also have 18” barrels and 13.75” LOPs. However, they weigh just a tad less at about 6.7 pounds, and they come with both ¼” and ½” LOP spacers to put between the buttpad and stock to better fit the gun to your exact needs.

In all, there are 42 models at the time of this writing. If you’re looking for a bolt-action rifle in .22 LR, .22 WMR or .17 HMR calibers, then the Ruger American Rimfire might have something that’s just perfect for you.
