The very affordable Ruger EC9s semi-automatic is a 7+1 capacity 9 mm concealed carry gun with pleasingly smooth contours and non-adjustable low profile sights integrated into directly the slide. The name EC9s comes from Essential Compact 9 mm. The trailing little “s” stands for striker-fired.

First, let’s cover some characteristics. For starters, the EC9s is a streamlined, striker-fired, compact pistol built around a 3.12” alloy steel barrel with six grooves and a 1 to 10” RH twist.

Actually, the EC9s is a range of 13 models. All but five are sold new through exclusive distributors. The standard color is black. Thus its hardened alloy steel slide and barrel are both black oxide finished. The single-piece glass-filled nylon frame is black. Just about everything else is black too.

The fun is with the four other models and their eye-popping colors and finishes. Two have the same black oxide slide as the standard model but have different colored frames. One is gray and the other is flat dark earth (FDE). Finally, we have the last two models, both having an aluminum Cerakote slide finish. One has a purple (yes, purple!) frame while the other’s is turquoise (yes, turquoise!).

Metrics of note include the 4.5”, height, slim fit 0.9” width and an 6.0” overall length. The net result is a feathery 17.2 ounce weight!

The gun’s designers put extensive thought into making the EC9s virtually snag free. EC9s have many curves that combine to bring harmony to the design. Contour lines on the frame and slide are soft rather than harsh bevels. The result is both practical and pleasing.

The sights are all black, integrated and thus immovable, and have rear serrations to cut glare. The ejection port is cut low and flared. The slide has diagonal serrations at back. Grip detailing is nicely done with diamond hatching on the front, sides and back. The word “RUGER” is embossed into the upper grip and, of course, there is the circular Ruger logo on each side.

Four key controls – takedown pin, slide stop, manual thumb safety and magazine release are all on the left side. There are some really nice details. For instance, pull down on the thumb safety at back to reveal a red dot. For more safety, there a magazine disconnect, a trigger safety, and a loaded chamber view port.

The gun comes standard with one 7-round black single-stack magazine with counting holes and a black finger grip extension for improved control and comfort. The Ruger EC9s semi-automatic is made in Prescott, Arizona, and thus Made in USA.
