The Ruger Super Redhawk 6-shot 10mm Auto, 44 Rem Mag, 44 Special, 480 Ruger and 454 Casull revolvers. There are 10 models in current production, almost all featuring overstrength satin stainless-steel construction and textured Hogue grips. These group into Super Redhawk and Super Redhawk Alaskan.

Let’s start with the Super Redhawk Alaskan. It has three variants, all built around 2.50” long 6-groove barrels. There are three calibers: 454 Casull, 480 Ruger and 44 Rem Mag. The first two have non-fluted/roll-marked cylinders and weigh 44 ounces while the 44 Rem Mag has a fluted one and weighs 45 ounces. All three measure 7.62” overall.

All three revolvers have an extended frame with the distinct lifted knee profile angling the backstrap to a knobby corner before dropping down to the black Hogue Tamer Monogrip fitted around the peg-style grip frame. The Home Tamer Monogrip has extra internal padding for recoil mitigation and has three deep finger recesses.

These revolvers have front ramp sights and adjustable rear sights that are fully adjustable for elevation and windage. All you need is a simple flat-head screwdriver to adjust.

Next, we have the Super Redhawk lineup. These come in 5.0”, 7.5” and 9.5” barrels, 44 Rem Mag, 454 Casull and 10mm Auto. The 454 Casull model has non-fluted/roll-marked cylinders while the rest are fluted. The 5.0” is 10.5” overall and weighs 47 ounces. The 7.5” is 13” overall and weighs 53 ounces! And finally, the 9.5” barrel revolvers are 15” overall and weigh 58 ounces!

Like their Super Redhawk Alaska siblings, the Super Redhawk 454 Casull and 44 Rem Mag have 6 grooves and Hogue grips. The 10mm is the outlier. It has rubber grips with nice-looking hardwood inserts! Except the 44 Rem Mag 7.5” barrel gun, all have front ramp sights with a red insert. But the latter has a Hi-Viz Green front fiber optic sight.

While other Ruger revolvers offer choices for different finishes, sizes, calibers, barrel lengths, grips and more, these are laser focused. The material and grips are all the same. These differ only in caliber, barrel-related metrics (barrel length, overall length and weight). And don’t forget: .44 Magnum models are dual chambered; thus, they can also fire .44 Special ammo.

At the heart of each Super Redhawk is a cold hammer forged barrel. Cold hammer forging makes for denser, purer, stronger and more durable barrels. It also permits ultra-precise rifling and thus the resulting accuracy.

And then there are the safety aspects. Ruger thoughtfully and smartly provides a transfer bar safety. The gun won’t fire unless the trigger is squeezed, which engages the transfer bar. So drop the gun, and it won’t fire. There is also a loading gate interlock that also provides some safety against accidentally firing the gun.
