The SAR USA P8S is yet another 9x19mm high-capacity semi-automatic from well-known Turkish gun maker SAR. The 17+1 P8S is the smaller brother of the P8L, also covered at GunBroker.com. The P8S stands for small or short while the P8L stands for large or long. P8S is a double-action/single-action (DA/SA) semi-automatic pistol with excellent ergonomics, fit and finish.

The gun’s outstanding visual feature are its three oval lightening ports on the slide’s front flanks and the corresponding long compensator oval ports on top. These ovals serve not only as lightening ports but as the front grips. The combination can evoke all kinds of things, including something off a steampunk movie set. But then settling things back down, the slide’s rear serrations are the more standard diagonal types.

The P8S’s dimensions are 3.8” for the barrel, 1.4” width, 5.6” height and 7.2” overall length. Weight is 35.8 ounces. In comparison, P8L’s main dimensions are its 4.6” barrel, 1.4” maximum width, 5.5” overall height and 8.0” overall length. Weight is 37.9 ounces.

The P8S comes in all steel black with black grips, stainless steel with black grips or stainless steel with white inlaid wooden grips. Either way, it’s fetching! The slide, barrel and frame are all either forged alloy steel.

For safety, the gun has a manual safety (thumb safety) at back left. There’s also a firing pin block and a hammer block that should prevent the gun from discharging if and when it’s dropped, which is great!

The gun has low profile sights. It’s a white three-dot kit. The rear sight has a ramped front-face and is fully adjustable for windage and elevation.

The gun’s controls are all on the left. There’s nothing ambidextrous about the gun, but for right-hand shooters, everything will be exactly where they expect.

The scimitar curved trigger sits in a trigger guard/trigger housing that’s not quite an oval. In fact, this is where SARS adds what might be a unique design feature. The top of the trigger surround cuts up into the frame providing a little more room for gloved finger operations. The guard’s mostly front face is horizontally serrated for better tactile feel and it ends in a tiny finger rest.

The grip has SAR’s signature style. It’s narrower behind the trigger and below the beavertail than for the rest of the grip. The grip’s trunk is thicker and palm filling in a way that’s particularly optimized for ergonomics and comfort. The black rubber grip panels on the black and stainless steel models are textured. The wooden grips on the third model are beautifully inlaid with white panels and golden scrolls and golden outlines. In all three cases, the frontstrap and backstrap have vertical serrations.

The P8S comes with a pair of black 17-round steel magazines.
