The over and under Savage 24 originated as a 24” long .22 LR rimfire rifle barrel on top and a matching length 24” long .410-gauge shotgun barrel on the bottom. There were also plenty of other models including the 24A, 24B, 24C, 24CL, 24E, 24H and 24J, each representing different configurations of barrels, sights, etc.

It’s an iconic gun in part because its roots hark back to 1938. It was originally produced by Stevens as the Model 22-410. The USAAF took advantage of its compact disassembled dimensions to provide it to aircrew to use for survival guns. Stevens ended Model 22-410 production in 1950; Savage had already bought Stevens way back in 1920. Now Savage started producing the Model 22-410 the same year Stevens ended production, but re-christened it Savage 24C (as in 24” barrel Combination).

The Savage 24 is a cleverly designed takedown model that collapses easily into two main components half its overall length. Disassembly and reassembly are easy and tool-less. This shotgun barrel has no choke and thus provides a larger pattern than some similar guns.

The lower barrel was initially offered in only .410 gauge and later also in 12-gauge and 20-gauge.

In standard guise, the gun features a blued barrel, blued receiver and wooden stock. There’s a barrel selector atop the hammer. The gun has adjustable iron sights. It has proprietary scope mounts. Moving down, it has a cross-bolt safety. Overall length is 41”, and it weighs 7 pounds.

Beyond .22 LR capable, the top barrel was also offered in .22 Magnum, 22 WMR, .30-.30, .357 Magnum, .22 Hornet, .222 Remington, .223, and .357 Max.

Some models feature a wonderfully designed buttstock with on-board storage for both shotgun shells and .22 LR ammo.

The Savage Model 24 was discontinued in 2010 after a 72 year run. Not bad, right? But it remains popular. To this day, the gun is a favorite of those heading into the wilderness and for other situations too!
