The Sig Sauer P226 Full Size alloy frame 9 mm 15+1 capacity semi-automatic pistol is a fine lineup of six models and 19 SKUs as of 2021. The six primary models have engaging names like Equinox, Nightmare, Legion, Legion RXP, Nitron and MK25. Their features and differences are engaging as well!

All have stainless-steel slides with forward facing diagonal slide serrations in back. Behind the slide is the exposed hammer. Both Legion and Legion RXP have an elegantly curved beavertail while the other four sprout one that’s short and docked and thus perhaps easier to carry.

Let’s sweep through all six models. You can also find more detailed individual model writeups here at GunBroker.com.

First, Equinox hails from SIG’s Custom Works division and thus earns a CUSTOM WORKS LIMITED EDITION tag. The Equinox name comes from Latin, meaning “equal (day and) night”, so it’s perfect for the two-tone gun that pairs a stainless-steel slide with the matte black hard coat anodized finished alloy frame.

The Equinox is double-action/single-action (DA/SA). It measures 1.5” wide, 5.5” tall with an overall length of 7.7” wrapped around a 4.4” long barrel. The sight radius is 6.3”. Total weight is 34.0 ounces or just over two pounds. These 9 mms have carbon steel barrels and Nitron-finished stainless-steel slides. Nitron is SIG’s name for its PVD (physical vapor deposition) finish. It looks great and makes any gun corrosion resistant and more durable.

What literally stands out on these guns is their nickel-plated fasteners, safeties, hammers, slide release, trigger, magazine release and any other externally visible actuation points.

Equinox 9mms have X-RAY3 Day/Night Sights, a curved trigger, classic contour SL G-10 polymer grips and two 15-round steel magazines. They also feature a three-slot SIG Rail, which is shallower than MIL-1913 rails and has a curved bottom.

Next, the P226 Nightmare is the same as Equinox except its slide is Nitron black. Nitron is SIG’s name for its physical vapor deposition (PVD) finish. PVD makes the Nightmare look great and more corrosion resistant and durable. Thus the gun is basically all black except the various nickel-plated parts.

There are six standard Legion models. These differ from the Equinox and Nightmare primarily in having a matte gray Elite Cerakote over both slide and frame and unique “Legion” diamond hatched G-10 polymer grips. On top they have an X-Ray (Square) sight set pairing a fluorescent green dot front sight to a two white dot square-notch serrated rear sight.

The six Legions are split thee and three into SA/DA and single action only (SAO). The SA/DA trio have Precision Straight Adjustable Intermediate Trigger (P-SAIT) triggers sourced from Grayguns. As the name implies, it’s a flat-face trigger adjustable for both pre-travel and over-travel. The SAOs have non-adjustable flat-face triggers.

Each Legion trio has standard 3x15-round magazines or Connecticut, Hawaii, Illinois, Maryland, New Jersey, New York and Massachusetts-compliant 3x10-round magazines. One of each group has an 8” overall length. All six have matte black finished fasteners, safeties, hammers, slide release, trigger, magazine release and any other externally visible actuation points.

The Legion RXP is like the standard Legion but adds a SIG SAUER Electro-Optics X-RAY high visibility day/night sight set. The Legion RXP’s dimensions differ slightly from the other P226 series semi-autos. The tall red dot rear sight (and the slightly taller front sight) decreases the sight radius to 5.7” and increases total height to 6.4”. Weight increases to 34.4 ounces.

The Legion RXP includes four variants. Two are SA/DA and two are SAO. Each pair has a 3x15-round magazine option or 3x10-round magazine option.

The Nitron is like the first two models, but all Nitron black for the slide, frame and everywhere else. Thus, it replaces the fasteners, safeties, hammers, slide release, trigger, magazine release and any other externally visible actuation points have a matte black Nitron finish. There are four SKUs. The standard model has two 15-round steel mags. The Massachusetts and California compliant versions feature two 10-round steel magazines instead. All three sport SIGLIGHT sights. The fourth SKU has two 15-round steel magazines but steel 3-dot Contrast Sights. The four models have nicely textured E2 grips that will further assure control and stability.

Finally, the MK25 model is the US Navy SEALs sidearm. It has SIGLITE sights, comes with three flush-fitting 15-round steel magazines, a standard curved trigger and textured rather than diamond-hatched black polymer grips fastened by a pair of black flat-head screws.

Sig’s P226 MK25 has an accessory-friendly three-slot Picatinny rail ahead of the combat trigger guard that has a flat face with a little finger rest at the bottom. Moreover, these 9 mms have carbon steel barrels and Nitron finished stainless-steel slides with forward facing diagonal serrations in back. The frames are alloy and given a hard coat anodized finish. Compared to the other five models, the MK25’s beavertail is a bit shorter.

A nice little P226 touch is the MK25 slide’s left flank is engraved with an anchor, a nod to its US Navy SEAL patronage. The standard P226 MK25 Full Size also has Massachusetts and California compliant versions that feature three 10-round steel magazines in lieu of the standard 15-round steel mags.
