The Sig Sauer P228 10+1 capacity 9mm Luger semi-automatic pistol takes the well-known Sig Sauer P226 double-stack high-capacity frame and other key components but mates it to a shorter slide and barrel. Sig shipped the polymer frame guns new with a solitary 10-round or, for law enforcement, 13-round magazine. But they could also use 15-round and 20-round magazines that fit the P226.

The recoil-operated P228 was the sidearm of the US Navy’s Special Warfare forces. It’s also been used by the FBI, DEA, ATF, etc. It was compact, high capacity, resistant to water and the elements, accurate, lightweight and reliable. You could get it as a DA/SA (double-action/single-action) or double-action only pistol. What else could they want?

The P228’s dimensions start with its 3.9” barrel. The gun’s height is 5.4”, width is 1.5” and the length is 7.1”. The long slide creates room for a good sight radius that stretches 5.7” between the sights. Completely empty, the gun weighs 26.1 ounces. An empty 10-round civilian magazine weighs another 3.0 ounces.

The trigger has a 12-pound pull weight for double-action but only 4.5 pounds for single-action.

The 3.9” barrel has six grooves and a fast 1:10” twist ratio.

Sig offered the gun in matte black K-Kote, blue or Two-Tone (silver slide on matte black K-Kote frame) finishes. The P228 enjoys many characteristics common to this type of gun. The polymer frame rises high up into a docked beavertail. The slide has diagonal grip serrations in back (but not in front) and the trigger guard angles up a bit toward the front and ends in a deep undercut at back. The grip is nicely textured all around, and the magazine mounts flush into the grip. Speaking of the grip, it has a straight front face but the backstrap has a gentle palmswell.

For each color combination, Sig had four models. The standard DA/SA P228 with 3-dot sights, the same but with SIGLITE night sights, the DAO version of the standard P228 and then the DAO version with SIGLITE night sights. For safety, the P228 featured Sig’s automatic firing-pin lock.

The P228 was produced from the mid-1980s to the 1990s and then abandoned in favor of the P229. However, in 2012 Sig launched the M11A1, which is a P228 with a short trigger reset. The P228s were produced in Exeter, New Hampshire and thus Made in USA.
