The Sig Sauer P229 Compact alloy frame 9 mm 15+1 capacity semi-automatic pistol is a lineup of seven models and 15 SKUs as of 2021. The seven primary models are Equinox, Nightmare, Legion, Legion RXP, Legion Compact SAO, Nitron and M11-A1.

All have stainless-steel slides with forward facing diagonal slide serrations in back. Behind the slide is the exposed hammer. The Legion, Legion SAO and Legion RXP wear an elegant, curved beavertail while the other four have a short, docked beavertail.

Let’s sweep through all seven models. You can also find more detailed individual model writeups here at GunBroker.com.

First, the Equinox. It’s from SIG’s Custom Works division and thus earns a CUSTOM WORKS LIMITED EDITION tag. The name comes from Latin, meaning “equal (day and) night”, so it’s a perfect name for the two-tone gun that pairs a stainless-steel slide with the matte black hard coat anodized finished alloy frame.

The Equinox is double-action/single-action (DA/SA). It measures 1.5” wide, 5.5” tall with an overall length of 7.1” wrapped around a 3.9” long barrel. The sight radius is 5.7”. Total weight is 32.0 ounces. These 9 mms have carbon steel barrels and Nitron-finished stainless-steel slides. Nitron is SIG’s name for its PVD (physical vapor deposition) finish, which looks great and makes any gun corrosion resistant and more durable.

What literally stands out on these guns is their nickel-plated finished fasteners, safeties, hammers, slide release, trigger, magazine release and any other externally visible actuation points.

Equinox 9mms have X-RAY3 Day/Night Sights, a curved trigger, classic contour SL G-10 polymer grips and two 15-round steel magazines. They also feature a three-slot SIG Rail, which is shallower than MIL-1913 rails and has a curved bottom.

Second, the Nightmare is the same as Equinox except its slide is Nitron black.

There are three standard Legion models. These differ from the Equinox and Nightmare primarily in having a matte gray Elite Cerakote over both slide and frame and unique “Legion” diamond-hatched black G-10 polymer grips. On top they have an X-Ray (Square) sight set. This pairs a fluorescent green dot front sight to a two white dot square-notch serrated rear sight.

This SA/DA trio have P-SAIT triggers. The P-SAIT flat-face trigger is adjustable for both pre-travel and over-travel and sourced from Grayguns. The SAOs have non-adjustable flat-face triggers.

Because of their extended contoured beavertail, the Legions are 7.4” in overall length. All three have matte black finished fasteners, safeties, hammers, slide release, trigger, magazine release and any other externally visible actuation points.

The standard P229 Legion Compact has three 15-round magazines while the Connecticut, Hawaii, Illinois, Maryland, New Jersey, New York-compliant model has three 10-round magazines instead. There is a sole Massachusetts-compliant model that seems identical to the aforementioned multi-state model.

The Legion Compact SAO has two models. The standard P229 Legion Compact has three 15-round magazines. The Connecticut, Hawaii, Illinois, Maryland, New Jersey, New York state-compliant model has three 10-round magazines instead. There is no stand-alone Massachusetts model.

The Legion RXP is like the standard Legion but adds the tall red-dot ROMEO1PRO Reflex Sight with X-RAY3 Day/Night Sights with. The Legion RXP’s dimensions differ slightly from the other P229 series semi-autos. The tall red dot sight increases total height to 6.4”. Weight increases to 34.4 ounces.

The Legion RXP includes four variants. Two are SA/DA and two are single action only (SAO). Each pair has both a 3x15-round magazine option and a 3x10-round magazine option.

The Nitron is like the first two models but all Nitron black for the slide and frame. Thus, it replaces the fasteners, safeties, hammers, slide release, trigger, magazine release and any other externally visible actuation points have a matte black Nitron finish. There are two SKUs: Massachusetts and California compliant versions. Both feature two 10-round steel magazines and SIGLIGHT sights and textured E2 grips.

Finally, we have the M11-A1. This model is the compact version of the P226 MK25 Full Size US Navy SEAL sidearm. Thus, the M11-A1 has SIGLITE sights, a standard curved trigger, and textured rather than diamond-hatched black polymer grips fastened by a pair of black flat-head screws.

Sig’s P229 M11-A1 has no rail ahead of the trigger guard. There are two variants: one with three 10-round steel magazines and the other with three 15-round steel mags.
