The SIG Sauer P320 AXG Classic and AXG Scorpion are compact striker-fired 9mm Luger semi-automatics. Depending on magazine choices, they are 10+1 or 17+1 semi-autos. AXG stands for Alloy XSeries Grip and the package is by Custom Works. There are two variants of each: one with three 10-round magazines and one with three 17-round magazines.

In all four cases, the slide catch, magazine release, takedown lever, trigger, sights, removable sight plate and barrel are matte black! So how do they differ? The AXG Classic has a Nitron slide finish and a matte black anodized grip module, diamond cut walnut colored Hogue grip panels (and matching backstrap) and a curved trigger. Note: Nitron is SIG’s name for its PVD (physical vapor deposition) finish. It looks great and makes any gun corrosion resistant and more durable.

The AXG Scorpion has a flat dark earth (FDE) finish, a skeletonized flat trigger and Hogue Scorpion G10 grips. These instinctively fetching grips evoke either snakeskin or a terrain contour map. The skeletonized flat trigger reduces trigger pull by about 30% compared to the curved version on the AXG Classic.

Below the finishes and colors, the P320 AXG architecture mates a stainless-steel slide, barrel and frame to a polymer grip module. The grip module has an upturned beavertail and is richly featured with an M1913 accessory rail under the muzzle. You also get excellent non-slip grip texturizing and serrated surfaces for all levers and other key moving touchpoints.

SIG infuses suspiciously good ergonomics and design attributes into incredibly intuitive operation. Thus, the P320 AXG showcase thoughtful touches and well-done tactile surfaces ranging from the expected to the unusual. For instance, the slide has forward leaning diagonal grip serrations in both front and back.

Additionally, the gun is set up for ambidextrous use. The thumb safety at back is ambidextrous and the magazine release can be reversed for either left-hand or right-hand use. The slide rear cap has a recessed tray contour that facilitates feeling your way around the pistol. And for more safety, the AXGs feature a Loaded Chamber Indicator (LCI), striker safety and a disconnect safety.

Integrated in the grip module is the combat trigger guard. It has horizontal serrations and gentle concave surface and a deep undercut at back. The AXG Classic has a standard curved trigger with a 6-to-7-pound trigger pull. The grip module also has an integrated 3-slot MIL-STD-1913 Picatinny accessory rail under the muzzle.

The SIGLITE X-RAY3 Day/Night Sights mean the front has a high contrast green tritium dot sight while in back the lower contrast (blackout) rear sight has two tritium dots as well. The dovetailed front sight shifts left or right for windage or swaps out with other height front sights to adjust for elevation.

The four variants share so many characteristics including color, frame and all key dimensions. So the 6-groove 1:10” twist 3.9” carbon steel barrel sits in a long slide that gives the gun an 7.2” overall length. The sight radius is 5.8”. The AXGs are 5.5” tall and 1.3” wide. These guns each weigh 31.3 ounces.

SIG Sauer makes the P320 AXG Classic and P320 AXG Scorpion in Newington, New Hampshire.
