The striker-fired SIG Sauer P320X is the compact version of the highly regarded P320 line of 9 mm semi-automatic pistols. It’s so good that in 2017 in a deal worth $580 billion, the US Army selected the P320 in both standard and compact form as its new sidearm. The new SIG Sauers will replace earlier Beretta 9 mm pistols.

The X in SIG Sauer P320X stands for compact and true to name, it’s a few millimeters smaller in every dimension than the standard SIG Sauer P320. The P320X’s overall length is 7.0”, which is 1” shorter than the P320. The barrel is 3.6” (versus 4.7”), width 1.3” (versus 1.4”), height 5.3” (versus 5.5”) and finally, its weight is only 25.3 ounces (versus 29.4). In spite of the reduced dimensions, it’s still a 15+1 configuration 9 mm gun designed to outperform all competitors and packs much into its smaller shape.

While a cursory glance might make it look practically at home in as a World War I pilot’s sidearm, the compact SIG Sauer P320X is a brand new for 2019 9 mm semi-automatic pistol of the highest quality.

There is a brilliant efficiency to the design and seemingly no excess weight. There are also some lovely styling details. For instance, SIG designed slide grips at the front and rear of the slide, but for the compact, the grips and the top of the slide slope down toward the front.

This SIG Sauer pistol comes standard integrated with X-RAY3 daytime/nighttime sights instead of simple sight posts or blades. The front sight is a green tritium lamp inside a green luminescent circle while the rear site has green tritium inside of white luminescent circles. The square-notch rear sight is horizontally serrated to mitigate reflections. The benefit is that these daytime/nighttime gunsights permit the gun to be used under a variety of lighting conditions.

Along the top of the barrel, a loaded chamber indicator shows when there’s a round in the chamber. And unusually, the rear has a black sight plate permitting upgrades to the Leupold DeltaPoint Pro, SIG Romeo 1 or SIG Romeo 2 red dot reflex sights. The new for 2020 SIG Romeo 2 is an improved version of the SIG Romeo 1. Romeo 2 uses a standard 2032 battery and comes with various shrouds for various configurations (open shroud, half-shroud or full shroud). The full shroud fully seals the Romeo 2 against all dust and other environmental factors.

The SIG Sauer P320X is comfortable. Everything is where you’d expect it and want it. The beavertail is slightly shorter than on the larger models. This gun feels good in the hand and looks good too. The flat trigger slopes out toward the bottom of the trigger guard and then breaks when the trigger is brought to vertical. The front of the trigger guard itself is vertical and has serrations for enhanced feel. Underneath the muzzle barrel is a small accessory rail for laser sights, etc.

The grip is nicely designed. There is a middle finger indent and the grip tail has been curved inward toward the base for snag-free concealed carry.

The SIG Sauer P320X’s materials are weighted just right, neither too heavy nor too light, and yet everything feels very rugged and long-lasting. The slide is Nitron finished stainless steel, the frame is stainless steel and the barrel is carbon steel. Everything has been assembled with tight manufacturing tolerances.

There are two SIG Sauer P320X sub variants. The 320XC-9-BXR3-R2 comes with either two 15 round steel magazines and the 320XC-9-BXR3-R2-10 comes with two 10 round steel magazines. Otherwise, the two guns are fully identical.
