The Smith & Wesson M&P380 Shield EZ is a 380 Auto (.380 ACP) 8+1 striker-fired semi-automatic designed for self-defense at home or elsewhere. The EZ suffix denotes S&W’s design mantra of this gun’s four “EZ” features: easy to clean, load, rack and use.

Key metrics include a 3.675” long barrel, 5.0” height, overall length of 6.7” and a weight of just 18.5 ounces! The 18-degree grip angle is optimized for aim and comfort.

Polymers are easy to work with: they lower both price and weight. Incorporating a striker-fired design means simpler internal architecture with fewer parts, which generally increases reliability and lowers production costs. Thus the M&P380 Shield EZ combines a black polymer frame with an easy to rack slide, excellent features and ergonomics into a relatively affordable and easy to carry defensive package. The M&P380 also has a three-slot under-muzzle Picatinny rail.

There are actually four M&P380 Shield EZ models. They can be had with or without an ambidextrous thumb safety at back and with or without a cleverly designed and highly rated Crimson Trace Green Laserguard laser. This targeting laser mates to the under-muzzle Picatinny rail and curves under the trigger guard to end with a button atop the front grip.

The gun’s architecture is great: both the slide and barrel are made of stainless steel coated with a tough, corrosion resistant, Armornite finish. The slide is mostly cut down so that from the front all the way to just before the rear serrations, it is narrower on top than at bottom.

The slide is very easy to rack and the wavy rear serrations are a nice design touch. Atop the slide, the gun has dovetailed sights including a white dot front sight and at back a two-dot site adjustable for windage rear site. And the action is internal hammer fired.

The gun has been designed with safety in mind. The slide top has a TLCI (tactile loaded chamber indicator) where one can feel and/or see if there’s a round already loaded in the chamber. At back is a grip safety. And, as already mentioned, you can get the gun with or without an ambidextrous thumb safety at back. Moreover, you can disassemble the gun without pulling the trigger. And speaking of which, the one-piece trigger is light, crisp and has an audible and tactile trigger reset.

The grip is fully texturized all around. Facilitating life for left-handed users, the magazine release is reversible, and obviously the grip safety at back is ambidextrous.

The gun comes standard with two single-stack 8-round M&P380 Shield magazines that have been designed with the EZ philosophy, and thus they have a Load Assist Tab button making them easy to load. A long diagonal slot runs through the magazine’s middle, and it’s numbered so you can immediately see how many rounds are loaded.

The Smith & Wesson M&P380 Shield EZ is made in Springfield, Massachusetts.
