The Smith & Wesson Performance Center Ported M&P9 Shield M2.0 compact semi-automatic 9 mm pistol was introduced in 2016. M&Ps stands for “Military and Police” while “Shield” refers to the gun’s defensive conceal carry aspects. This gun takes favorite features of Smith & Wesson’s full-size semi-automatic pistols and incorporates them into this small, compact, light-weight gun.
The M&P9 Shield M2.0’s standout feature is its factory porting along the top of the slide just behind the front sight. As with muzzle brakes in artillery or tank guns, these channels vent propellant exhaust gases up, providing downward thrust. And this in turn helps reduce recoil and muzzle flip permitting faster follow up shots.
The M&P9 Shield M2.0 has other advanced features. For instance, it has a Performance Center seer for faster trigger reset, and it features Performance Center striker plunger for a lighter trigger pull.
The M&P9 Shield M2.0 has front and rear Tritium night sights. The back of the slide has wavy nearly vertical serrations. There is a conveniently positioned thumb safety and the synthetic grip is molded for ideal comfort.
The gun frame is polymer while the barrel and slide are both stainless steel, thus there is steel on steel contact between the two. The slide is coated in Smith & Wesson’s patented Armornite finish while the frame is matte black.
Even with all this, the gun’s weight is 18.2 ounces, or 1.14 pounds. Barrel length is 3.1” and total length just three inches past that at 6.1”.
The gun comes with two magazines, but unusually, they have different capacities. Thus the M&P9 Shield M2.0 is both a 7+1 and an 8+1 bringing total capacity to 8 and 9 rounds respectively.
The compact size makes it ideal for concealed carry for people of all sizes. This same compact size and lighter recoil, etc., also makes it ideal for kids to use for plinking.
Like all other Smith & Wesson guns, the Smith & Wesson M&P semi-automatic pistols are made in Springfield, Massachusetts.
