The premium Springfield Armor 1911 Custom Handguns series covers 20 different models. They’re all 1911 semi-automatics, of course. And Springfield builds a smorgasbord of other 1911s, spanning the same sizes, many of the same features, chambered in 9mm and .45 ACP.

So what makes these so special? Simple. These take the major forged and machined parts and then further hand craft, shape, hand-fit these components for even tighter tolerances than possible by simply assembling source parts. The ramp and throat barrels are polished. The front straps are 25 LPI precision checkered. The pistols are tuned for ultimate reliability. Etc. All this work is done by master-craftsmen at Springfield, many of whom belong to the American Pistolsmith Guild.

The result is 1911s that are nicely thought out with many features. They’re a delight to hold, and you’ll enjoy them for target practice or self-defense. There are three broad sizes: compact, full-size and “Distinguished” built around 4”, 5” and 6” long stainless-steel 1:16 twist ratio match grade forged barrel respectively.

The compact 4” barrel guns are generally 7.6” long overall, 5” tall and weigh around 31.5 ounces. These ship with two 6-round magazines for .45 ACP and two 8-round magazines for 9mm.

The 5” barrel guns are typically 5.5” tall and 8.6” long and weight about 40 to 48 ounces. These ship with two 7-round magazines for .45 ACP and two 9-round magazines for 9mm.

Finally, the 6” barrel guns are 5.7” tall, 9.6” long and weigh 45 ounces! These ship with two 7-round magazines for .45 ACP and two 10-round magazines for 9mm.

For all these guns, typically both the slide and frame are forged carbon steel. The steel frame gives it substantial heft compared to aluminum alloy frames and means it weighs 43 ounces. Springfield Armory uses a strong forged slide, forged barrel and a forged frame for amazing quality. In contrast, other companies often cast theirs. Forging gives increases durability.

Sights range from Novak low-profile combat 3-dot tritium sight sets to even lower Aristocrat T5-45 Fully Adjustable Target sights, etc. Almost all have a fairly unique self-lubricating chemically bonded Black-T polymer finish that protects against impacts and rust on both slide and frame.

In back, the series has a skeletonized and horizontally serrated loop hammer, a left side thumb safety and below that a grip safety. Some have an integrated three-slot Picatinny rail under the recoil spring housing.

All have a circular ported curved trigger with vertical serrations along its concave face. Pull pressure is typically in the range of 3.5 to 4 pounds. The grips are either splendid G10 polymer grips or lovely Cocobolo tropical hardwood grips with beautiful diamond hatching and the famed “double arrow” flat head screw surrounds at top and bottom. Each cocobolo grip is punctuated with Springfield’s famous crossed cannon rondel at center.

The Springfield Armory 1911 Custom series is Made in USA at the company’s Geneseo, Illinois location.
