The full-size Springfield Armory 1911 Range Officer Elite Operator 8+1 10mm semi-automatic is feature-rich, imposing, impressive and practical. It’s a delight to hold, and you’ll enjoy it for target practice or self-defense.

While Springfield 1911 lineups usually include various calibers and sizes, the almost all black 1911 Range Officer Elite comes in just one trim: the 1911 Range Officer Elite Operator. But don’t be surprised if Springfield adds more trims at a later date.

What contrasts nicely to the black is the 5” long stainless-steel 1:16 twist ratio match grade forged barrel. Height is 5.5” and length is 8.6”. Both slide and frame enjoy a fairly unique self-lubricating chemically bonded Black-T polymer finish that protects against impacts and rust.

This 10mm ships standard with two 8-round magazines each. Both the slide and frame are forged carbon steel. The steel frame gives it substantial heft compared to aluminum alloy frames and means it weighs 41 ounces. Springfield Armory uses a strong forged slide, forged barrel and a forged frame for amazing quality. In contrast, other companies often cast theirs. But forging gives these guns a durability advantage.

Atop the slide you’ll find dovetailed sights. This means a red fiber front sight and a tactical rack twin white dot rear sight. The sight’s rear is serrated. It’s also quasi-cantilevered, which increases the sight radius.

The slide has both front and back forward leaning grip serrations. In back, you get a skeletonized loop hammer with nice tactile horizontal serrations, an ambidextrous thumb safety and below that a grip safety. It also has an integrated three-slot Picatinny rail under the recoil spring housing. Note: the GI style recoil system’s spring has a tough 18.5-pounds spring strength.

The curved trigger is gorgeously triangular ported and has vertical serrations along its concave face. The grips are wavy Thin-Line G10 polymer grips. They look great, feel great and their gray palette color scheme goes very nicely with the Black-T finish.
