Meet the Springfield Armory XD-S MOD.2, a concealed carry, striker-fired, single stack, semi-automatic pistol with 9 mm, .40 SW and .45 ACP options. The “S” in XD-S stands for small, slim or single-stack or maybe all three. It’s definitely single-stack and, at .9”, it’s definitely slim. And we’ll cover the small part too.

The gun has five models, which we’ll get to in a few moments, but regardless of model, each shares the following attributes. Each comes standard with two stainless steel magazines. All have a 3.3” length barrel. Each is 4.4” tall with the flush magazine and 5.0” with the extended magazine. All share the full-length guide rod and dual captive recoil spring system that mitigates recoil.

Now let’s cover the five models and their differences. Not surprisingly, since 9 mm is perhaps the world’s most popular caliber, there is a pair of 9 mm models. Each has a 1 to 10” twist ratio, is 6.3” long in overall length and weighs 21.5 ounces with 7-round flush magazine and 22.5 ounces with the 9-round extended magazine. They feature Pro-Glo Tritium/Luminescent front and tactical rack profile serrated-back rear sights. The Pro-Glo tritium sight a green lamp surrounded by a luminescent green outline. The only difference is one model is all matte black while the other has a stainless-steel slide.

There is a single .40 SW model with the 1 to 16” twist. Its overall length is also 6.3”. It weighs 22 ounces with the 6-round flush magazine and 23 ounces with the 7-round extended magazine. Unlike its four litter mates, the .40 SW has a red fiber optic front sight and a tactical rack white dot rear sight.

The last two models are .45 ACP. They are a tad longer at 6.5”. They weigh 23 ounces with the 5-round flush magazine and 24 ounces with the 6-round extended magazine. They feature Pro-Glo Tritium/Luminescent front sights and tactical rack serrated-back rear sights.

The XD-S MOD.2 is fairly conventional and functional in design. Primary controls such as the disassembly lever and slide stop are only on the left. The trigger guard, grip and slide back all tilt forward vaguely in parallel. The gun has rear serrations, but none in front, and there is a small single-slot Picatinny accessory rail below the recoil spring housing. The grip is short and has thumb rest indents just behind the trigger. Speaking of which, the trigger guard has a deep undercut.

With safety in mind, XD-S MOD.2 has a loaded chamber indicator atop the slide. You can see it and/or you can feel it to know if a round is chambered or not. And moving down a bit, the magazine release is ambidextrous.

Safety is of paramount concern at most times, and especially when carrying. Springfield has a safety trident of a firing block safety, a rather discrete passive grip safety and a safety trigger.
