Springfield Armory’s Defend Your Legacy Series XD Sub-Compact Handgun is a 13+1 capacity 9 mm striker-fired semi-automatic. At its heart is a 3” long hammer forged steel barrel with a 1:10 twist ratio. The XD series has been around since 2001. It has proven very popular because of its ergonomics, features and quality, all at an affordable price.

The slide is forged steel. It has a common cross section of a flat top with round joins on either side that lead to the flanks. The front lacks grip serrations because, after all, this is a sub-compact, and there’s no real room for them, but there is a quintet of forward leaning grip serrations on either side in back.

The XD Sub-Compact has classic durable steel white dot (3-dot) front and rear sights dovetailed into the slide. Both slide and barrel are given a matte black Melonite finish.

The gun has a dual captive recoil spring with full length guide rod for improved accuracy and cycling as well as recoil mitigation.

The frame is black polymer. The trigger guard has a diagonal lean to the forward face. This forward face also has subtle but practical horizontal serrations for improved placement and tactile feel. Underneath the muzzle is a single-slot Picatinny accessory rail so you can add lasers or lights.

The grip has finger locators behind the trigger. The grip is straight along the front, square-hatched in front and back and textured along the flanks. The backstrap has a superb palmswell to it.

Overall dimensions include a 1.2” width and 6.25” overall length. Height is 4.75” with the 13-round flush magazine. This increases to 5.5” with the extended magazine. Weight is 26 ounces with the flush mag and 27 ounces with the extended one.

While the Defend Your Legacy Series XD Sub-Compact has plenty of positive attributes all around, one area in which it stands out even more is in its comprehensive approach to safety. For starters, this semi-auto has Springfield’s Ultra Safety Assurance (USA) Action Trigger System (safety trigger), a grip safety atop the grip at back and a firing pin block safety. It also has a loaded chamber indicator atop the slide and a cocking indicator at rear of the slide.

The gun sells new with a single 13-round flush-mount magazine. That there is only one magazine instead of two or three is part of the affordability equation. But there are other magazine choices available. There are 10-round and 16-round mags that are both flush-mount. Additionally, one can get 10-, 13- and 16-round extended magazines. These XD Sub-Compact guns are Made in Croatia.
