Talon Armament’s flagship Tengu TAR semi-automatic pistol is an AR-15 chambered in 5.56, .300 Blackout or .224 Valkyrie. It’s Made in USA from a variety of compelling components that still result in a high-quality yet affordable gun. In Japanese mythology, the supernatural tengu has both bird-like and human characteristics. This name parallels Talon’s flagship Gryphon GAR AR-15 rifle as the gryphon had an eagle’s head, wings and talons with a lion’s body, rear legs and tail. Tengu is an engaging name and speaks to protection, power and strength.

Both upper receiver and lower receiver are forged from high-strength 7075-T6 aerospace industry aluminum alloy that’s then hard coat anodized for durability. The gun has a free-floating M-LOK handguard. It has the typical raised roof octagonal cross section. The “roof” shelters the gas block and gas tube. A long full-length Picatinny accessory rail runs continuously the full length of the upper receiver and the handguard. The gun comes without sights but is, of course, optics ready.

The single-piece handguard has M-LOK slots at 3, 6 and 9 o’clock positions. The four other sides have a repeating pattern that uses ovals and rounded corner triangles to create a latticework that looks unique, strong and attractive.

Inside the handguard, you have a choice of either a 7.5” or 10.5” barrel. In either case, what you get is free-floating, heat treated and made of dense and durable 4150 chromoly vanadium steel (CMV).

Many components will be most familiar to even casual AR-15 fans. In front is an A2 birdcage flash suppressor. On the bottom is an A2 polymer pistol grip. In back, you can get either a standard pistol buffer tube with foam pad or a Tailhook pistol brace. The former looks like a supersized version of wind noise reducing microphone you might find on a high-definition camera while the Tailhook pistol brace is something else.

The Tailhook pistol brace is compact, strong and, at just 4.5 ounces, impressively lightweight. It’s machined, under an inch thick and features a QD sling swivel. It doesn’t even need a buffer tube.

The Tengu TAR semi-automatic pistol comes with a 30-round detachable box magazine and a great looking flat gray polymer case. This AR is made by Talon Armament in Kennesaw, Georgia.
