The stunning Walther Q5 Match SF (Steel Frame) semi-automatic 9 mm match pistol looks like it dropped in from a sci-fi movie. This pistol visually evokes Walther’s 5” barrel .22 LR PPQ semi-automatic polymer frame pistol. However since the Q5 Match SF is for competition, it has some important changes beyond just the different ammunition.

Perhaps the most obvious difference is Walther Q5 Match SF’s 8.7” long overall length, which is longer than normal for a 5” barrel. This creates a longer sight radius (meaning the distance between front and rear sights). The longer the distance, the more noticeably inaccurate sighting becomes.

Height is 5.4” and width is a robust 1.3”. The beefy and ultra-precise milled steel frame brings the weight up to 41.6 ounces (2.6 pounds) unloaded. This weight absorbs and thus decreases recoil.

The standard LPA-made dovetail sights can be replaced. The red fiber front sight can be adjusted for elevation while the two white dot polymer rear sight can be fine-tuned for windage. This gun is ready for optics. The rear deck is already cut. Walther has three different mounting plates for Doctor, Trijicon or Leupold/DeltaPoint optical sights, and provides one free mounting plate with purchase.

The slide has front and rear grips, but the front ones are open through to the barrel. These cut gun ports beautify looks, but these are mainly functional as they make for a lighter slide and thus faster recycling. But when not shooting at competition matches, these same gun ports make for great conversation.

The gun has a loaded chamber indicator at the right rear of the slide. A long beavertail increases comfort and eye-catching looks.

Both the slide and frame are finished in black Tenifer. Grip panels wrap around the back of the grip and can be changed out using a 2 mm hexagonal wrench.

The Walther Q5 Match SF’s Quick Defense Trigger is eye-catching blue. Walther designed to gun to have consistent 5.6 pound trigger pulls for shot after shot and a very short .4” travel.

The slide release is ambidextrous and the magazine release button can be set up for either left hand or right hand shooters. Speaking of which, the Walther Q5’s magazines have witness holes permitting easy count of how many rounds remain inside when the magazine is removed. Thoughtfully, the round count is marked by each hole.

Under the muzzle, the gun has a full-length MIL-STD-1913 Picatinny rail for laser sights, lights and other accessories. The Walther Q5 Match SF Standard version comes with three 15 round magazines. The Pro version has three 17 round magazines while a third version comes with three 10 round magazines.
