Founded in 1945 by Roy Weatherby, Weatherby Inc. is an American gun manufacturer best known for its high-powered magnum cartridges like the .257 Weatherby Magnum and .460 Weatherby Magnum. Today, they manufacture cartridges, rifles, and shotguns. The original production of Weatherby rifles were built on commercial Mauser actions and were built to customer's specifications. Weatherby used any action the customer wanted, provided it was strong enough to handle the desired cartridge. In 1956 Weatherby commissioned Danish firm Schultz & Larsen to build 378 Weatherby Magnums utilizing the Mauser Model 54 bolt action. Many of this action's features then made their way into Waeatherby's proprietary bolt action design two years later.

In 1958 Weatherby introduced the Mark V bolt action, an in-house design to withstand the hottest of Weatherby's experimental cartridges. Throughout time, the manufacturing of the Mark V switched from Germany to Japan and then in 1995, to the United States. In 1970, Weatherby introduced the Weatherby Vanguard action which borrows many of the same characteristics and design elements of the Mark V with two locking lugs. The rifle was built by Howa of Japan as a more affordable rifle for the average hunter. Based on the Howa 1500 bolt action, and initially offered only in standard calibers, the Vanguard provided an attractive alternative for buyers in the market for a sporting bolt action rifle like the Winchester Model 70 or Remington Model 700. The Vanguard is now available in select Weatherby magnum calibers.

Weatherby Rifles

Today, Weatherby still offers only the Mark V and Vanguard lines of centerfire rifles. The Mark V uses two action sizes: the larger 9-lug bolt action is used for the larger Weatherby magnum calibers and the smaller 6-lug action is used for the 240 Weatherby and all standard calibers. Weatherby rifles come with a guarantee of a 1.5 MOA and even sub-MOA accuracy from a cold bore of some models, a guarantee that most rifle manufacturers cannot offer.

Weatherby Shotguns

Weatherby offers a line of shotguns for bird hunting, and trap/skeet shooting. Weatherby produced over-under double barrels, side-by-side double barrel, pump, and semi-automatic shotguns. Weatherby shotguns are made by Italian gun maker Fausti Stefano.
