The Winchester Model 290 semi-automatic .22 rimfire rifle debuted in the 1960s. It was a budget rifle that offered good features and good content. There were two models: the standard Model 290 and the upgraded Model 290 Deluxe.

Note: The 290 was part of a series that also included the very similar Winchester 270 and Winchester 270. The three were almost identical, except the 250 was lever-action, the 270 was pump action and the 290 was semi-automatic.

The standard Model 290 had a 20.5” long barrel with a 1:16” right hand twist and a tubular magazine. Overall length was 39”, length of pull 13 3/8”, drop at comb 1 3/4" and drop at heel 2 3/4". Weight was an even 5 pounds.

Naturally, the Model 290 used short, long or LR rounds. Capacity was 21 short, 17 long or 15 LR rounds of 22 ammo. The receiver was grooved for tip-off scope mounts. At times the gun came standard with a front square post sight on a streamlined ramp and an adjustable for elevation rear square notch sight. At others, it came with a bead post front sight on a streamlined ramp and a fully adjustable for windage and elevation open rear sight.

For safety, the gun had a cross lock in the front top of the trigger guard.

The 290 Deluxe added sling swivels, basket-weave checkering, a high-gloss Monte Carlo walnut stock and a luxuriously finished receiver. The dimensions and features were otherwise the same except the drop at Monte Carlo was 2 1/4".

The Winchester Model 290 and Model 290 Deluxe were made in New Haven, Connecticut, and were thus Made in USA.
