Up for auction is a very rare all original “480” code Walther P38. This exact pistol was pictured on page 225 in the book, “The P.38 Pistol Volume 1” by Warren Buxton. A true collector’s example of rare lineage. The “480 code was known as the first true military P38 officially purchased by the German military. Noted author and expert historian Warren Buxton estimates there were approximately 440 pistols in this early stage of manufacturing. This example comes in the standard configuration featuring a 5” barrel, drift adjustable front and rear sights. Grip panels are serial numbered to the gun and feature the wider lanyard loop slot. Inside panels are “eagle/359” proofed as well. Magazine is stamped “P.38/1928” with the “eagle/359” proofed on the spine. Left slide is stamped “P.38/480” followed by the full serial number. Serial number is also stamped on the left side of the frame, under the barrel as well as last digits on the locking block. “eagle/359” proofs can be found on the normal and customary small parts as well as the left frame and right slide. Left rigger guard web has the “480” code proofed.
This example comes from the collection of Warren Buxton and features a proud degree of her original salt bluing finish. Mechanics on this example are crisp and the bore is bright with slight age related wear noticeable in the grooves. We have attached multiple Hi-Definition photographs in various lighting conditions for your review and consideration. She comes as photographed.

P.38 History

The Walther P38 is a 9 mm semi-automatic pistol that was developed by Walther Arms as the service pistol of the Wehrmacht at the beginning of world War II. It was intended to replace the costly Luger P08, the production of which was scheduled to end in 1942.The first designs submitted to the German Army featured a locked breech and a hidden hammer, but the Heer (German Army) requested that it be redesigned with an external hammer.
The P38 concept was accepted by the German Military in 1938 but production of actual prototype ("test") pistols did not begin until late 1939. Walther began manufacture at their plant in Zella-Mehlis and produced three series of "test" pistols, designated by a "0" prefix to the serial number. The third series pistols satisfactorily solved the previous problems for the Heer and mass production began in mid-1940, using Walther's military production identification code "480". After a few thousand pistols the Heer changed all codes from numbers to letters and Walther was given the "Ac" Code.
