While there are a few Walther P5’s on the market, most are pristine “collector grade”. Few, if any, are as eminently shootable as the one offered in this auction. Based on the P38 design, the P5 takes combat pistol technology steps further and adds novel and useful features through innovative German design and superior quality manufacturing that collectively make Walther the Porsche of semi-automatic handguns. Design of the P5 locks the barrel to the frame in two places (German engineering) and with minimal slide/barrel clearances, provides superior accuracy. This gun was a German police issue and has been carried and shows superficial finish wear, but has hardly been fired. Bore and all internals are clean, sound, and ready for thousands of rounds of shooting. Included in this auction is the original serial numbered Walther box, instruction manual (totally in German exclusively) and spare magazine (a total of two, genuine factory Walther P5 (so marked – see photo) magazines are included) as well as the original German police holster. Innovative “single button does all” feature. On the left side is a button that drops the slide and decocks the hammer. Rear sight is screw adjustable for windage – and has a clever spring detent locking mechanism. Screws on the sight (and all other screws) are “unbuggered” and show no evidence of use. Front sight is a white dot, rear sight is a white post (both well-made steel). “Dotting the I” is the fastest sight arrangement for me – much better than three-dots or a straight eight (dot above dot) configuration. I see lower case “i’s far more than I see three dots aligned horizontally or two dots aligned vertically. This is the design of the P5 – white dot front over white post rear – to me it’s FAST and instinctive. Slide is beautifully marked with the Walther banner, P5, and Carl Walther, Waffenfabrik, Ulm/DO. This fine pistol is triple-serial-numbered. Serial numbers on the frame, slide and barrel all match. The barrel even has the Walther banner marked on it next to the serial number! What incredible evidence of pride of design and manufacture! The P5 has an innovative dual safety design. First, the hammer is of the “rebounding” type – only goes fully forward when the trigger is fully depressed. Second, the firing pin “tilts down” at the back at all times and fits into a hole in the uncocked hammer. The firing pin is elevated to horizontal and is struck by the flush portion of the hammer only when the trigger is fully depressed. Striking the hammer with a non-depressed trigger cannot fire the P5 because the firing pin is not contacting the flush portion of the hammer and the hammer cannot go fully forward. Earl's calls the P5 one of the finest pistols ever made. The P5 should be especially of interest to left handed shooters because this particular design ejects empties to the left. Left-handed shooters have been plagued by “visual disturbances” from pistols designed for right handed shooters that throw empties across their field of vision. Not so with the P5 – it throws empties to the left. I know – I test fired this pistol and can testify to this exceptional characteristic. This particular model was imported by PW Arms, Redmond, WA and is dated (by factory markings on the slide) February 1984. The holster is also a marvel of engineering design and construction. It is purpose built for the P5 and fits it like a glove. The holster has three positions for use: 1) locked straight down and does not swivel (in this model you always know where the gun is), 2) unlocked and free to swivel (makes getting into vehicle, sitting at desk, etc. easy), and 3) detached from the leather belt loop base (for safe storage before going into prisons, etc.). If this holster were currently made and sold in the USA, the retail price would be in excess of $250 due to the quality of design and construction. See photographs showing the extraordinary design and materials of this holster specifically made for the P5. Integral plastic sight channel, innovative safety retaining mechanism (quick to release to wearer, but grab-resistant) and swivel/quick-detach features are on par with the superlative design of the P5. Thus, whether you are a Walther aficionado or a left handed shooter wanting a distinctively different, non-plastic framed, classic design based, high quality pistol that you can bet on when the chips are down, this is the 9 mm you must have in your armory. You will be thoroughly impressed with the engineering design that was incorporated into this pistol and will be even more impressed after shooting it. TERMS: No trades.
