This is an early "Antique" black powder percussion derringer in .50 caliber. This is a "DUELING SIZE" derringer. The barrel is a 3" seven groove. There is a 1/2" ignition block attached to the barrel. The overall length is 7.5". This is a well made derringer made between 1810 and 1860 or so. The only mark on the outside side plate is "Deringer" and the word is spelled with one "R" much like the Henry derringers. There is no other markings on the outside and we do not know if it is a Philadelphia derringer or a well made look alike. The gun is in very nice condition. The hammer spring locks up solid. The trigger pull is crisp. The condition of the percussion nipple is strong and is not flattened. There is light scroll work on the hammer, side plate and trigger guard. There are silver inlays on this derringer. There is a shield on the top grip. There is a silver inlay butt protector on the bottom of the grip, both sides of push pin, below the ignition block and at the front of the stock. The ramrod is old as the stem is ebony and the wood is filled thru the brass tip. The ream rod is loose fit to the gun. There is one stress crack on the left stock up by the push pin. There are several markings on the inside of the derringer. We have highlighted the markings with a white grease marker. The bottom of the barrel is marked with a double proof stamping. There is also an "EWJ" and an "E.H." on the bottom of the barrel. The bottom of the ignition block is stamped with the number "68" and the "E.H.". The bottom of the tang is also double stamped with the "EWJ". We are not sure who made this derringer and are open to any feedback about this piece. this will be an online auction item only.
