This is a Smith & Wesson .38 Military & Police Model 1905 – 4th Change .38 Spl revolver. It is the five screw model on a “K” frame square butt. It has a 4” pinned tapered barrel. I took off the side plate and there was no hammer block and the side plate had not been modified for one. Overall the bright blue finish is good with some handling wear. There is an area of holster wear on both sides of the muzzle. There are spots of pitting on the right side of the barrel. The top strap, back strap and fore strap show some light frosting. These appear to be signs that it was carried and left in the holster too long. On the fore strap, the word "KERFOOT" has been scratched in the metal (Picture #30). I did not notice this until I looked at the pictures. The grips appear to be the original walnut SW K frame, square butt, Hand Ejector Stocks. They have the flush silver Smith & Wesson medallions. The grips are in good condition. These types of grips were used from 1929-1941. The serial number for the revolver is near the end of the production. With this information (serial number and grips) I estimated the mfg date to around 1940-Pre war. The serial number is stamped in the correct places: cylinder face, barrel flat, fore strap, inside of yoke, and under the star extractor. The barrel is marked “SMITH & WESSON” on the left side and “38 SW Special CTG” on the right. The single line “MADE IN U.S.A.” is marked on the frame’s right side. The lock up is good and has a good bore. There is no box or paperwork. Must ship to FFL. Shipping is $30.00 (USPS, Priority-Insured). I can accept a credit card with no additional fee.
