Pre War Example - 1932 1st Year Production Colt “ACE” – Engraved - .22 Long Rifle - 4.75" Barrel - Factory Blue – Authentic Engraved Mother of Pearl Sides – Two Tone 10 Round Magazine - Classic Semi-Automatic Pistol

"Open Bid" - "No Reserve" format, where Gunbroker.com members set the opening and closing bids

Up for auction is a custom offering of the Colt "ACE". The serial number is: 1883. She has been researched through Proofhouse to be a 1st year production model manufactured in 1932. The total production numbers were limited for the .22LR chambered Colt ACE. This example has been custom engraved and fit with engraved Mother of Pearl sides. The sides are authentic and feature an American Bald Eagle crafted into the right panel. Left panel is smooth pearl. Colt artisan gunsmiths used the legendary heat bluing process for the factory blue application.
The "ACE" has the standard 4.75" barrel and all the feel and look of the legendary Colt 1911. More classic features include: grooved / arched mainspring housing, lanyard loop, wide spur hammer, short checkered trigger and the correct fiber washer stacked spring guide. Mechanically, the firearm is in excellent condition and the bore is strong. We have attached multiple Hi-Definition photographs in various lighting conditions for your review and consideration. She comes as photographed. Enjoy the auction!

Colt "ACE" Special History

Working for the U.S. Ordnance Office, David Marshall Williams developed a .22 training version of the M1911 using a floating chamber to give the .22 long rifle rimfire recoil similar to the .45 version. As the Colt Service Ace, this was available both as a pistol and as a conversion kit for .45 M1911 pistols.
While the Colt 1911 was chambered in the powerful .45 ACP cartridge, the externally-similar Colt Ace was chambered for the far less powerful .22 LR cartridge. Accordingly, military, police, or layman shooters could shoot the ACE without the recoil and expense of the 1911, but with similar ergonomics and sight picture.
The history of the ACE begins in the late 1920’s early 1930’s era, when Colt manufactured everything with a very high order of fit and finish. Its 1911 pistol (and the 1911A1 variation) had a 20-year history of service to the republic. Even in the civilian / law enforcement markets, the pistol sold well. Organized pistol matches grew in popularity, and they were often fired with the service .45 ACP. In 1929, Colt tried a variant of the 1911 in a new chambering, the high-velocity .38 Super. It was well accepted, so the next step was a full-size pistol in .22 LR. It was called the "ACE" and was marked with a different rollmark on the slide incorporating a prominent diamond with “ACE” inside.
